Posted - Jan 25 2008 : 12:25:38 AM Drew and I have ordered the hedge roses for the first part of our hedgerow this spring. I'm so excited to be able to actually get a start on it. It will be so pretty and feed so many little birds and animals once it has grown a bit. We also talked about adding a tiny pond to our garden list of fun stuff to do. Our front garden is going to be so pretty *does the happy dance* The back yard is the dogs yard and mini orchard which I'll be adding some heirloom apple and pear trees to, along with some quince and crabapples. I'm just happy. My garden is coming together at last.
I took it down to one yay! heehee. Late night posting has it's drawbacks. I can pick up my shrubs on April 21st, this is going to be so cool, I have a lot of my seeds and am plannin' and dreamin' my way through the 3 and 4 foot snow drifts. I love playing in snow, but the drifts and digging out cars is getting a teeny bit old. How are you other garden nuts coming along with your grand garden schemes? Any suggestions for wild life loving shrubs and small trees? I live in zone 6. Anyway, happy gardening!

Posted - Feb 07 2008 : 6:20:17 PM That's a good idea. What kind of berries and plants are you going to mix in? Here in Western Oregon the blackberries take over everything! I am constantly fighting them. You'll have to let me know how it all turns out. I am waiting for some Starry Night roses I ordered. Supposedly in good soil they will grow up to 6 feet. If that's the case, I'll see how your hedge is doing and might add some of the same plants. But no black berries! haha

Posted - Feb 07 2008 : 4:25:06 PM Shannon, I hope it'll be pretty eventually. I love roses of all sort, but I'm fond of the simpleness of the wilder ones and think they will make a lovely rustic hedgerow. I feel for the little birds around here in the open and want to give them a shelter to hide, rest and feed in. So eventually the hedge will have other wild berry and food plants in amongst the roses

Posted - Feb 07 2008 : 1:16:41 PM I got red rugosa and Wood's roses because I know that they are very tough and survive here. I'm not sure what else I'm planting in the hedgerow this spring, but at least I'll have the foundation for it.

Posted - Jan 26 2008 : 5:16:22 PM I may be down to one "Yay" We are in for more deep snow this weekend, but this year I ordered my roses before they sold out. I love dreaming through the catalogues and am down to deciding which flowers I need or can afford LOL!

Posted - Jan 26 2008 : 4:53:21 PM Annika, your yard sounds like it's going to be beautiful! Make sure to post pictures for us this summer.
I'm still in the planning, dreaming & budgeting stage for mine. I must admit it was fun to go through the seed catalogs and gardening books while our latest "Arctic Blast" went through.
