I usually just buy my seeds and such from walmart but I want to try to get more varities of stuff this year. Which catalogues do you suggest I send away for?

I love Seed Savers--I like their policies as well. For example, I ordered my Garlic in July, and I picked my shipping date for late October. They don't charge my credit card until the shipping date in mid october. This year, I bought potatoes and prairie plants, one for March, the others for May--they will break it up. As far as seeds go, they have a nice variety, and I like their descriptions. Bakers Creek Heirloom is good, too. Both I've ordered from, but I'm doing the majority of my ordering this year from Seed Savers.

Several catalogs were mentioned in the link titled "Seed catalogs" started by QueenofQuiteALot. Also, you may want to check out the one titled Garden Watchdog by LoveLady. You'll get a lot of helpful info there.

Julie, I am a seed catalog junkie! Here are the ones that I have gotten so far this year:
http://seedsavers.org/ This is the Seed Saver's Exchange. It is a really neat catalog to look through. Basically all heirlooms that people have saved seeds from and given to the SSE to propagate.
http://rareseed.com/ Baker's Creek Heirloom Seeds. Everyone should get this catalog, if only to see the dizzying array of possibilities for the gardener. It is astounding! I have also heard that they have excellent customer service and quality. They are also located fairly near to you, so maybe you could go check them out.
http://www.territorialseed.com/ I really like this company. They have a great selection of varieties of veggies, herbs and flowers. Some of their stuff is pricey, but others are quite affordable.
http://www.nicholsgardennursery.com/ They have a wide variety of herbs and homebrew supplies. A good selection of veggies and flowers, including some unusual South American varieties.
http://www.cooksgarden.com/ Kinda expensive, but fun to look. They have loads of lettuce and many European varieties.
http://www.vermontbean.com/ They have a good selection with great prices. Not sure of their dependability, though.
http://www.jungseed.com/ A slightly disorganized, cluttered catalog, but with lots of varieties and low prices.
http://www.stokeseeds.com/cgi-bin/StokesSeeds.storefront This seems to be directed towards market growers who don't mind pesticides, fungicides, and all the other -cides.
http://www.superseeds.com/ I don't actually have this catalog, but I stumbled onto the site yesterday and think that I may get quite a bit from them. They have good varieties, great prices, and soap/papermaking supplies.
I am sure that I have more of them, but that's all I can think of for now. You should definately get the Johnny's catalog that another Farmgirl suggested. They have soo many varieties and really, the best information on growing that you can ask for. Good luck and have fun!
Oh, by the way, I think that I am going to get one of your covered notebooks for my garden journal this year. I am pretty excited. I will try to go pick one out today. |
