Hey gals! I had this crazy idea this summer and finally put everything into action today, since it warmed up to 50 this afternoon. I have a pathway that I have been working on, so far it was only lined with monkey grass (lirope). I dug a trench on the other side of them, about 9" deep, laid down a line of white Christmas lights, and every 15 inches I took a green wine bottle, neck-down, over two lights, then filled the trench to a depth of 4" and put in my bulbs I got for half off last week - tulips and marcopa (sp?). Filled it in the rest of the way.
I got to see my work tonight - shame the neighbor's outdoor lights are so bright, I should have put 3 lights into each bottle, but the result is really neat! In spring I'll be able to put some annuals or perennials in between the bottles after the bulbs are finished, and then it will be pretty photogenic. I hope.
Not that I am a wino or anything... I have had to save bottles since August so I could at least do part of my pathways like this! But it was fun. We haven't been drinking anything in blue bottles for a long time, but those would be even prettier I think.

I'm sorry I can't send this nice weather your way, Betty Jo. It won't last forever, and it is pretty odd to have a warm spell like this right after the bitter cold we just had (11 degrees the other night - BRRRR!)
Lisa, I think beer bottles would be easier if you know someone who drinks it, since they are so much shorter. Less far to dig, and they come in brown and green, right? Or clear. |

Hello Lynn, I'm jealous almost got to 50 today but have 2 feet of snow that needs to melt before I can get into my garden. But it does feel like a heat wave!

Wow, I really like that idea, too. I might try that one someday (if I found enough bottles) and possibly use those new LED Christmas lights. They cost less to run.

6 lights would probably have been better!
Julie, I just used the indoor/outdoor xmas lights I bought this year. Seems like they make all of them for outdoor use too now. I also used plastic baggies and rubber bands over the outlet ends of the light strands, to keep moisture and dirt out (and so I can add on later if I so choose). |

Lynn -- I saw an idea like this in a magazine. Only they hung the wine bottles with lights in them around the edge of a patio cover. I think they had about 6 lights in each bottle. I love you idea!

sounds like a beautiful idea. Just be sure your lights are rated for outdoor use or you will get a nice shock the first time the line gets damp!
