Posted - Nov 02 2007 : 9:44:41 PM We have a lot of wild type roses growing around and I started wondering if anyone has ever grown roses from seed? I mean, they are free to try with, but I was curious if anyone has ever had any success?
Ever curiously Annika

Posted - Nov 25 2007 : 08:51:46 AM I'll take 'um! :P Actually, I'm setting up a green house and trying to see how many things I can get to grow from seed, I love the tangly wild roses and thought they'd look good in a mixed wild border along my fence line so I'm going to try and sprout some =)
Good luck with those multifloras. I think they were bred to be tough as nails

Posted - Nov 25 2007 : 08:42:03 AM Ha! We're trying to get rid of multiflora roses here! We've never had problems getting them started, just getting rid of them!

Posted - Nov 08 2007 : 10:54:08 AM Ok, here is what I've found with a REALLY quick search on Google http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/seedsave/2003112340010020.html http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/rosespro/2003054310016173.html
I'm going to give it a try just for fun...all they can do is fail to grow! Jana, I kind of know about the root stock issue, but I think that the wild ones don't apply since they sprout up all by their lonesomeness. I'll get pictures if I can get something to actually sprout...I'm going to try with some wild apple and crab apple seeds as well, though I have no idea what I'll end up with.

Posted - Nov 07 2007 : 12:07:37 PM Annika, Did you ever get a reply on trying to grow wild roses from seed? I gathered some seed from a volunteer wild rose on a beach in Scituate, Mass. I would love to try to grow them, but I need pointers also.

I have never had good luck growing roses of any kind, wild or otherwise. But to the best of my knowlege (from a gardening book), roses are best propagated by root cutting. I don't think the seeds are viable. If the roses are indeed wild, you will get a true duplicate of the parent plant. If they are "hybrid", like what you buy at a nursery, the roses that you see blooming are plants that are grafted onto different root stock, so a plant taken by cutting will be different.
