Posted - Nov 02 2007 : 10:44:03 AM We're moving this month to a new apt. I need to keep growing things, but our new porch will be almost entirely shaded- what can I grow in the shade? I'm very practical, and prefer useful things, like herbs and vegetables, and edible flowers like violets and nasturtiums, but I love some simply beautiful things, like roses and peonies too. :) |

Posted - Nov 10 2007 : 7:57:36 PM speaking of herbs, I am currently growing parsley, chives & basil on my kitchen window ledge. Katrina, do you have a sunny window that you could use for your herbs?

Posted - Nov 07 2007 : 09:17:39 AM I have a hard time growing herbs in the shade..i find it quite difficult. Judith's suggestion of woodruff was excellent! Also wild ginger grows in my VERY shady front yard. The only other herb I've had much success with growing in the shade is comfrey - it looooves shade!!! |

Sweet Woodruf will grow in the shade and smell awsome! A great addition to sashets. I've had luck with chives growing anywhere, also parsley.

Posted - Nov 02 2007 : 4:20:04 PM Mints can take shade. I'll have to think on some other herbs for shade. Maybe cilantro, if you get some sun...you can try stuff but thing like lavender and rosemary might get leggy if you don't get sun. Judy
