Okay I went and picked another t-shirt load full of tomatoes! LOL that fills up a 5 quart batter mixing bowl. I have about half that much again from earlier this week (since I shared with the neighbors) and I have even more coming on still! I think I am going to can my second batch of tomato sauce today.

The saddest thing was I had the hugest, reddest tomato, but when I went out today it was moldy! *sigh* I bet that thing was about 4-5 lbs! It was bigger than both my hands put together!!

How is everyone elses's gardens coming along?

All the tomatoes ripened at the same time and were too small from not enough water and too ripe for canning/consuming. So rather than just leave 'em there in the field, I fed them to the chickens

Our bigger tomatoes did ok but the same thing happened. One day they were green, next day they had a little red, then next thing you know, they had been baked in the sun and wern't fit to eat.

Our garden is too big to hand carry water every day

What does hot weather have to do with giving tomatoes to chickens? All of my tomatos ripened after it got really hot. :D

Yea, same here. My canning goes in fits and starts. Last year it was all about the tomato. I made some salsa and canned a few quarts of tomatoes, but not near enough. (Actually had a canning party w/ some local farm girls, but ended up giving them most everything) Had enough pickles from the previous year from that, so all cukes went for salads

This year it was beans on the brain. We ate enough tomato sandwiches and sadly, when the Romas finally did come on, it had already been really hot, so most of these went to the chickens.

Oh I know! Isn't it hard to even think about eating a store bought tomato after eating garden fresh ones all summer long? Next year I hope to be a bit more active with my gardening and actually get better crops in!

Go for it!

If you have other good garden veggies, you can can salsa too.

Blanch tomatoes to remove the skins, puree in a blender w/ other veggies add a little vinegar, bring back up to a boil, can like you usually do and enjoy this winter!

And, even in the dead of winter, i swear I'll wait 9 months or more before buying one from the store that tastes and feels like styrofoam!

Even the hydroponic ones don't taste like summer ripened do

I filled a huge tote bag full of tomatoes this morning. Some of them are just a bit shy of being ripe, but they will ripen up quickly now that I picked them. I will probably can some more tomato sauce in a day or so. I probably have enough to make three or four quarts of sauce just from this picking!

Enjoy while you can! Our tomatoes pooped out the middle of August...mostly due to all the heat. they were esentially cooking on the vines.

We plowed everything and are watching the winter stuff come up now.

Raspberries however are still coming on like gangbusters!

I salvaged a small handful of peppers too. Usually I'll get these until he first hard freeze, but again, peppers had their time and all but one plant (with tiny blooms) remains.

Mine are all done. Everything was killed sat. morning. I pulled tomatoe cages today. Next will be pulling flowers, and getting everything cleaned up. Baling hay first though.

My MIL brought me a whole bunch of tomatoes, since mine seemed to be taking *forever* to get going. The crop seems to be rolling in now though!

Oh yes! I remember the frustration and disappointment clearly! I am still a bit disappointed that is has taken so long for them to roll in! My mom has been eating tomatoes everyday since July!! Oh well! Now they are coming in nicely! I guess I just have to remember to plant them earlier than Mother's Day here in Idaho!
