Posted - Sep 15 2007 : 11:54:39 AM I am puzzled. Normally I have great gardens, but mine just did not produce the way it should have this year.
I planted enough tomatoes that I thought I would have them rolling in by the bushel- yet they are barely producing enough for me to have one every day. My peas were not worth mentioning as I never got enough to do much with them.
My carrots did pretty well but my lettuce got bitter and bolted before I got to do much with it.
All of my sunflowers save one, died. And the final one died these last two weeks. Needless to say- I am disappointed. I think the weeds had the best year though! LOL
Hopefully next year is better!

Posted - Sep 15 2007 : 6:55:41 PM A lot of people I have talked to around here didn't have their gardens do very well either. One lady said her tomatoes were rotting on the vine before they even ripened. I didn't get around to much gardening this year, for the same reason as Alee. Gardening just isn't very easy with a newborn, but next year should be easier for us! All I really had was squash, and there was a frost last night that pretty much killed them. Luckily, I got some squash from them beforehand. Kind of glad I didn't have the time this year. It's been a weird summer. |

Posted - Sep 15 2007 : 3:49:26 PM I didn't have anything but tomatoes in a barrel this year and have been getting a few from them. Next year hope to have my square foot garden in.

No I haven't tested my soil. I think it was more my fault than the soil's fault. I live smack dab in the middle of some of the most nutrient rich farmland in the world (the palouse). It might have something to do with being pregnant and having a child this growing season :) I am still adjusting to being a mom, I think! :)

Posted - Sep 15 2007 : 12:17:47 PM Ours didn't do as well this year as it has previously, but there are also things we learned about our soil this year that didn't exist previously....We have plotted and planned next year's beds already and are simply going to let what is left go fallow so as to work what grows, the grasses and whatnot that creep through, back in as green manure. My MIL comes by when they come up to the cabin and walks down my walk way in disgust, simply because her flower garden is always pristine and she hasn't a clue about organic growing....I think it's funny.
Alee, have you tested your soil?
I am just pulling my carrots this afternoon. I have learned that a cold snap does wonders for the flavor of carrots.

Posted - Sep 15 2007 : 11:59:51 AM Hey Alee, the one good thing about gardening is,,,,"there's always next year!"![](icons/icon_smile_cool.gif) I am always changing, experimenting & being the non-conformist that I am, growing things the unconventional way! that's whats to fun about gardening, the blessings of gardening is when you get that 1 super sweet tomato or perfect shaped bell pepper. As long as I get 1 piece of fruit or veggie, I don't mind sharing w/the rest w/the wildlife or neighbors. But I do hate it when I have been nurturing my garden, then am gone out of town for a week (having a babysitter for my kitties & to water the plants) only to come home to a dead garden!!!uugghh! But at least my kitties are well fed! I'm thinking we'll have to start saving seeds for miss alee's garden for next year!!!
