My SIL had Peonies on all the tables at her wedding reception matched with little sprays of coral bells. It dressed p the tables in a lovely country style. :)

Posted - Sep 15 2007 : 10:36:49 AM Do it now. I woke up thinking about this very thing. How funny is that? They prefer fall division and transplant.
When you dig them up, your going to find a tuberous looking root. It may be more straight like a carrot or it may be long and fingery like a potato. I think that may depend on your soil as mine does both depending on which side I dig. One side is cultivated, but the other side well, it decided to wander off into the rock landscaping so the root groes where and however it can on that side.
The well defined root makes these easy to divide. I prefer to divide so that I have a batch of leaves on each piece of root, but if you have shoots coming off a segment thats probably good enough. Make sure there is no air trapped around the root when you transplant it, and don't forget to mulch well for this first winter. Uncover in the spring after danger of frost.
Peonies are my mothers favorite flower. They were also her mothers favorite flower. When I found this home and saw the peonies planted here, I took it as a sign that this house was for me. :)

Posted - Sep 15 2007 : 10:18:19 AM ????? I don't know if in dividing them, it has to be done different in different regions of the country??? Do you just cut through the plant? Where is Martha Stewart when ya need her!!! I've never grown peonies & my elderly neighbor has asked me to help her.
