Posted - Sep 10 2007 : 05:22:25 AM Hi
I picked up some tulip bulbs over the week end to plant but I think that it is too early to plant them yet. I think a couple more weeks. Am I right? I live in SE Nebraska.
Any advice would be helpful.

Posted - Sep 18 2007 : 06:13:01 AM I bought some allium bulbs a couple of weeks ago (they look like giant pom-poms on a stick!) It's a little colder up here, so I planted them last week. I noticed on my package of bulbs that is says you can plant them from early September to early December, depending on where you live.
Brenda, I love your idea of tulip bulbs as wedding favors! I've also heard of people giving evergreen saplings as favors. We gave our guests little packets of wildflower seeds and our invitations were made of that "wildflower" paper - it's homemade with flower seeds pressed right into the paper.

Posted - Sep 17 2007 : 5:31:43 PM I ordered tulip bulbs from Holland, Michigan last month, and they said they would ship when it was time to plant - and they arrived in my mailbox today.
So it must be time to plant them!
(they are the same type of tulip that we gave our wedding guests for favors 5 years ago -- September 14 was our anniversary... so it must have been the right time to plant them that year, also!)

Oh good! I have a really good idea of where they are at. They are in a very silly place on the eastern side of the duplex where no one ever sees them because they are hidden by trees and a place where no one ever walks. I think I will dig up the whole area and move all of them to the grass alongside the walk to the front doors. That way we will all enjoy them every day! :)

Posted - Sep 17 2007 : 09:32:23 AM It's not too late, Alee. You can dig them up right up until the ground freezes! The only problem...if you didn't mark their whereabouts...you might have a hard time finding them!

Posted - Sep 10 2007 : 12:01:45 PM Late fall, before the first frost is the best time to plant tulips. Here in IL that's mid-October or so. With global warming, I have known people to successfully plant tulips as late as early December! Keep an eye on your 10 day weather report for your area & that will give you an idea when to plant too. Have fun planting your bulbs. Before you know it, spring will be here to show you how they look!
