Posted - Sep 04 2007 : 05:14:48 AM I picked half of my corn yesterday and the ears are so short and there are several "missing kernels" in the ears. I have earwigs and sprayed orange juice into the corn a few weeks ago to get rid of them. They are tenacious little creatures. Could the earwigs have stunted my corn? Or is there another cause? Anybody have a better organic weapon against earwigs? The orange juice only seems to work for a few days. And that is costly if you don't have an orange tree in the yard.

Posted - Sep 04 2007 : 8:12:58 PM We just picked our sweet corn for the first time (labor day corn) and we also found a few ears where the kernels were "hit or miss" My hub said it was a pollination thing.
Here's a pic of my son and "his" labor day corn. He was in charge of the sweet corn. I got stuck with the rest, lol.

Posted - Sep 04 2007 : 08:12:40 AM Well, maybe I should describe growing conditions to help narrow down the problem. I planted the corn in a 4X10 raised bed. Five plants across and 11 plants long. I watered daily, mulched with grass clippings and fertilized with fish emulsion.
I wonder if it might have been too crowded?

Posted - Sep 04 2007 : 07:54:55 AM It sounds to me like they didn't pollinate well but I am by no means an expert or anything even close to it!
