In Alaska you need to be patient for the perfect end to summer. I tuck these tubers every winter and plant them, hoping beyond hope I'll get some nice flowers toward the end of summer.

It's called "Summer's End". I used to plant these along with roses in Oregon. It was spectacular. They rewarded me!

You all get to grow wonderful things, this simple flower really brings me such joy! jo

What a lovely dahlia. My father loves dahlias and always starts them early in pots (around March). They put on quite a show here. I love all the different sized dahlias too. Enjoy your summers end!

Let the frost kill the dahlias and then "cure" for a couple of weeks, dig up the tubers, they look like potatoes! Shake off excess soil and store them in sawdust. They should be kept in a 40-50 degree area, like the coolest part of your garage. In the spring when the soil warms up, bring them out, divide tubers and then plant. In the spring, I'll share a few of my tubers from this years crop. Don't divide until spring, the ends are more likely to rot if you cut them off in the fall (expensive lesson)! jo

Don't leave them in the soil if you live in a cold climate, they will not survive the winter, they are a warm climate plant.

I grew dahlias for the first time this year...I actually bought a bag of hosta bulbs, and there was a dahlia bulb in there by mistake. Not knowing what it was, I threw it in the ground and ended up with a tall plant, almost 4 feet tall, with loads of pink blooms.
Jo, do you know what to do with dahlias over the winter? Do I cut back the plant now or in the spring? Thanks! Alison

I am a terrible dahlia grower! I do know a few things.... they like warm soil, definitely not wet or they will rot. a little bone meal is very nice for them. In the spring when I divide I'll offer a few tubers to you all in MJF land. I think you need to plant them after the soil has warmed up. I put some black plastic over the earth where they will go........ jo

Wow, how beautiful!

I don't know much about dahlias but have admired them in my mother-in-law's garden. Then a few years ago she killed all hers... I'm not sure how.

I planted some this spring but haven't seen them yet - I didn't mark the spot well enough so I'm not sure where to look. I thought they were coming up but it turned out to be some black-eyed Susans.

Any special tips to try again next year? Do they do best planted early or late? Do they need lots of water or little? Lots of fertilizer or poor soil?

I only ask because judging by the beauty of your photo, you must be a dahlia expert!

It's lovely, Jo - that translucent pastel pink on the petals and the glow in the yellow center makes it look like it's lit from within.

What a beautiful dahlia! I love dahlias, too. They look so perfect it's hard to believe they're real. I really like how the blue/grey stones in the background set it off.

Jo, that is the most lovely piece of art! If you made a post card out of that image, you'd bring smiles to so many. The colors are pure bliss! I'd trade a whole lot of my gardening for a scene like that one. :)
