Hello, It has been awhile since I have chatted ladies so forgive me. I have had a severe change of plans. My husband and I are going to be living on a 50ft long house boat for a few yrs until we can save enough money to buy a piece of land and build our home. Can anyone help me in getting stared in growing some container plants. I grew some tomoatoes and they are just now popping out nice size tomatoes. Cant wait to have a nice tomato sandwich. I dont have much room so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well, this year I made raised beds, and although not quite the same as container gardening, none the less it's all done in a smaller space so the plants can grow up, and not 'out'. I'm sure you could grow some peppers. Of course depends on what size pots or containers you will be using. Squash grows like crazy, and I know you could grow it, it would just cascade over the sides of the container. Basil, oregano, and parsley, those can be grown in small pots or something like a window box. start getting seed companies to send you catalogs, and check out the interesting ideas they have for gardening in small spaces. I purchased a "bean tower" for 20 bucks, and had green beans that only took up about 4 square feet. You could do this in one of those half wiskey barrels. Id even say you could do a large container of green onions. Have fun!

In the spring time, the Chicago Botanic Garden plants different types of lettuces in hanging baskets. They look quite pretty & delicious too! You can also do herbs in containers as well as your tomatoes. Even small pepper plants work out in containers & look quite pretty as well. The skies the limit on container plants. Have fun & experiment like crazy. You'll probably be amazed on what you can grow!

Thanks Ladies...And Marybeth, I will look at my nearest bookstore and libary. We are on going to be on a lake...not saltwater. And I will have an aboundance of water. We are also going to make it solar and try to find a small wind turbine in the future to have a off the grid houseboat. We are very excited. My husband is getting his CDL license and he will be on the road alot. So I will have time to do somethings like gardening. Since it stays warm until October around here.

My daughter started a couple of bean plants in her classroom at school. When school ended, we planted them in a container, and they did quite well. Just a thought. . .

Hi Deborah. I did a search on houseboat container gardening and there are a few books out there, also an article about 'Houseboat Gardens of Sausilito, Ca'. One book looked interesting "The edible container garden--Growing fresh fruit in small spaces". there are more or go check out your library. Are you going to be on salt water? One of the houseboat books said you are only limited by your imagination. I see endless experimentation. FUN!!! MB

Marybeth, Yes ther are many people around...This is a huge Marina and alot of people live in the Marina full time. we are not near the end of the dock so Not sure about the glare...but I am sure there will be wind...Most are growing green plants...I wanted to try veggies and flowers |

Container gardening on a houseboat---WOW! It can be very interesting, although I imagine not much different than land. You might have more wind and glare from the water. Different things to take into consideration. Do you any neighbors there? What do they have growing? What fun. Experiment and try new things too. By the way I am having a tomato sandwich right now. My tomatoes are also just ripening. Good luck. MB
