My husband bought me the coolest old pumpkin shaped planter. It's pretty good size. So here's my question: Is it possible to grow a pumpkin vine inside of a container sorta like a houseplant. Not expecting it to bear pumpkins of course, just for the foliage? |

I have raised beds in my veggie garden and 2 half barrels in the back yard with pumpkins. I have 3 pumpkin plants in the half barrels. They actually don't need a lot of root space as long as the vines have somewhere to go. Now, I know you are in a warmer climate but I'm also thinking it would be too late to even get pumpkins this year. However, if you are just looking for ornamental value, I guess you could get that by...when is your first frost? Late Oct-early Nov? It can't hurt to try it.

i would think the 'vine' part would start out in the planter .. and trail off from there where the 'pumpkins' would grow. but isn't it toooo late right now to plant pumpkins and have pumpkins sprout before autumn? (not sure about this .. who out there knows the answer to this question? i could look it up i guess!) i planted a few pumpkin plants .. but like my zucchinni and squash .. the vines rotted because we had no rain .. and watering them jus' wasn't enough. a friend told me that lots of farmers lost these plants this summer. i agree with aimee .. sweet potato vine would look great in your planter!

The only problem I could see you having would be the weight of the vines. I it doesn't work ornamental sweet potatoe would be another good alternative.

I don't see why not! Give it a try! The worst thing that could happen is it would die and you would have to plant something else.
