Hey! I looked at all the Forums and couldn't decide where to put this question, but I had to ask.
Does anyone have an idea of how much an itinerant farmworker earns, or how they are paid? Say they are hired to pick apples - are they paid by the day, by the bushel, by the crate? And do you have any idea how much? I used to know this in Southern California, but now I'm in Washington and don't know any farmers, or farmworkers.
The reason I'm asking is for a church project.
If this is not an appropriate question for this forum, please disregard.

It used to be like that, and I thought it still was, but DD told me there are new laws. I looked it up on the WA state minimum wage web site and it says "The wage applies to workers in both agricultural and non-agricultural jobs." |

I thought there was a clause to the minimum wage laws about agricultural work?

Alee - the documented workers have to be paid minimum wage, unless they are piece workers then they are paid by the each for whatever it is they are doing, such as making Xmas wreaths. The undocumented workers, are another story. |

I am not sure how much they are paid, but I know it is very low if they are paid by the hour. I don't think they get minimum wage.

My uncle in Fresno, CA., is a Raisin Rancher (I hear the giggling in the back ground, yes, that's what they are called) and he pays his workers by the "Tray" not by the hour or row, A picker can make very good money if he/she hustles, but it is dirty work! My cousins & I were responcible to follow down the rows & glean, (to cut any bunches of grapes that the pickers might have missed.) And trust me the attack of the hornets was not fun!, oh and we kids did not get paid. It was considered our job as family members, but you know, we didn't expect to get paid. We had fun doing it, we'd glean a few rows then run & jump into the irrigation canal to rinse/cool off & then do a few more rows. We also would eat the grapes right off the vines, no washing, just sort of wiped them between our fingers & popped them in our mouth. We didn't worry about E-coli or other dreaded things like 'grems" and look at me today, oh wait, maybe not, hahaha!
Judy, hope you find the answer to your question. Have you cheked w/the Ag. dept? or any of the local farmers?

I will ask my daughter. She used to work with the migrant farm workers whose children went to school in her district. |
