Does one ripening tomato help the others around it ripen? I have only one that is barely starting to turn a suggestion of pink so I am wondering if once it really starts to ripen if the others will ripen because the ripe one? Don't they emmit some sort of gas as they ripen?

I just ran out side to see if the 2 days of rain had helped my tomatoes any. I got 1 ripe tomato for Mother Nature's efforts, but anothe handful are starting to turn yellow and ripen so I should be getting more in the next few days! Yay!

Oh I forgot to add, I did have some fried green tomatoes and squash the other day--YUMMY!

O.K. That answers my question. My tomatoes are still green, I have a bunch of them! The only ones that are getting ripe are my grape tomatoes and those are next to my bigger variety, no luck or gas rubbing off on to the others.

Alee,

I don't have an answer for you about the protuberances, but a few years ago I was getting those on my tomatoes...I just joked about them being "boy" tomatoes...

YAHOO!! I finally was able to pick 3 ripe(ish) tomatos! They look like MaryAnn's half ripe/half not but I just couldn't wait any more! I was so happy to see that some of them are starting to ripen up! They are now sitting on my kitchen ledge to ripen all the way to red.

So now I have a question for you ladies.

Today when I picked my tomatos one of them looked like it had two green slugs coming out the bottom- but it wasn't slugs! It was tomato! For some reason a few of my tomatoes have these weird protuberances on them. Anyone know why?

Ok you ladies might not want to here this but my first ripe tomato was in the third week of JUNE(early for us) and I have harvested 100's of pounds of tomatoes since . I have been selling tomatoes at the farmers market twice a week and selling at a coop grocery and a resturant. Last week I sold about 500 lbs! The last few nights I have stayed up way too late trying to freeze some and may can some this weekend. I wish some of you lived close enough to stop by the farm and I would give you some!

Cristine-

Thanks for the advice- I will probably end up doing that- I just so wanted to see red shiny tomatos all over my plants. :( Maybe next year I will have to start them indoors early instead of buying from a green house.

I'm pretty sure if you put tomatos in a brown paper bag with some bananas that they will turn a little more.

I am blaming this weird year on some sort of environment thing. Because I haven been bad about watering- great tomato crop but no red ones yet. This is really frustrating! I just want to be able to make spagetti sauce from garden tomatoes and can it! Is that too much to ask? *grumble* Oh well I guess I can always buy a few bushels from the farmer's market! LOL

Boy, I'm glad I read this, my tomatoes are STILL green too, and unfortunately they are falling of the vines....I'm so bummed. I thought it was something I did this year b/c neighbor down the street is selling nice ripe tomatoes in his front yard!

Now how on earth does this make sense? I always grow green, frost bitten tomatoes and this year I have had several red tomatoes, and you all haven't got yours to turn? I bet Jonni is on to something, because this year I've been so bad about watering. That, and I started my tomatoes indoors in Feb. The extras I bought at the store have only just started to put out fruit.

We make a difference.

My roma's are really prolific, and the celebrity, too. Laden with fruit--all green. I JUST got a fruit on my Mr. Stripey.
My friend in Washington state told me that if you water too often, it just feeds the energy into the plant, and not the fruit--to cut back on watering a bit. The only problem I have with that is that we are in drought conditions, and every single day when I get home, the plants look more like weeping willows than tomatoes. I don't want to ruin them.

It is funny, mine are green too. The plants are about 5 feet tall though. I did start pinching off tops, to try to get them to produce and ripen. I have cherry tomaotes that are huge. Michele

Yep, yep green tomatoes lots of them.
I have had a couple red ones but they are from sweet 100's and have small yellow pears that are getting closer. Weird year.
As we all sit and WAIT.......................

thank you thank you thank you!!!
our organic farmer friends have had tons of red ripe yummy tomatoes for sale at the farmers market for at least a month, but ours are mostly still green... we've had a handful of tommy-toes and a couple of our purple cherokees have turned as well as a few early girls, but everything else is hanging heavy with green globes...
hey! does anyone here have any experience with white tomatoes? we ahve some, but i can't figure out when to pick them... some of them look white in comparison to the green ones on the same vine, but i can't tell... and what do white ones taste like? same as a red? less acidic? thanks!

Even my early tomatoes that usually ripen by July 15 are just now starting to turn red. I know some varieties take longer than others, but I'm starting to worry that my late ones (last year ripened September 1) won't even be red before frost!

Weird, because a lot of other fruits are early this year.

ROFL!! I hate to admit it, but misery loves company- and I am so glad that I am not the only one dealing with this! I have started to wonder if I should just make a bunch of green tomato pies, but I have no idea what they taste like so I keep waiting for the red ytomato miracle to happen.
