Which would you choose? A veggie or fruit that was sort of funky looking or with small blemishes or the "perfect" looking ones? I am sure you are like me and would prefer the one with more taste...so I wonder why it became common practice to grow veggies and fruits for looks instead of taste? I mean- if you are a cook- aren't you more concerned with how something tastes as opposed to how it looks?

I forgot to mention. Hubby's aunt has a real red delicious apple tree. At first I thought she was kidding. The ones she has are red and yellow mottled, have fabulous crunch and are not too obnoxiously sweet.

Stephanie I am one of those people who looks for the marked down meat! They mark it down every sunday morning at our local store!

Hey Julie,

Yep..that guy at the famer's market knows that "most" will not buy something that doesn't look pretty...LOL It's a sad story but most people that have never had the pleasure of growing their food before just don't understand the real deal..LOL

Plus they combine $$ spent with the appearance.....think about the beef (which I do not eat) in the grocery stores that they mark down due to the aging of the meat..Alot of folks would rather spend the extra money to get a nice red piece of meat. They don't know that the marked down meat is the most flavorful due to the extra aging!

Again, they have probably never opened a package of freshly processed venison, goat or pork to see the great contrast in color compared to the grocery stores...they don't even know that "dye" is injected into alot of the meat so it looks so "fresh"....LOL

It's so nice to be around folks here that know better

Hey Alee,

You are so right about "flavor" being first! When I grow veggies they are all picked as "babies"...they are the most flavorful and have the highest nutrient value at that size.

That may not be practical for feeding a large family but it works great when just feed two people

And of course the "mega farms" don't pick them til they are full of large seeds, water and least amount of flavor then they sell and haul it to the masses.

Compare a fresh picked ripe Lemon to a store bought one! They pick those lemons when they are still green and then they ripen..they are aweful!

Yuk! is what I've got to say about it...LOL

I saw a gardening show on HGTV yesterday. The focus was organic growing. The guys went to a farmers market and asked the guy where his stuff came from and he said he grew it all himself. They then asked what the percentage of organic was and his response was "Are you kidding? 0%! If I don't spray my stuff every four or five days I wouldn't have any food that people would want to buy." They asked why he felt this way and said "Who wants to buy a mishapen tomato with spots on it" I immediatly though of you Alee and yelled to the tv "Alee would and so would I you silly chemical farmer!"

I buy for taste and not for uniform color and perfect appearance.
I've often thought that anyone who lived 100 years ago would probably not even recognize some of our fruits and veggies today, since nothing that you see in the stores is homegrown, and it's been genetically modified/perfected so much.

Case in point are those yucky Red Delicious apples in the stores. The red color is appealing, but they are mush. Same for the big peaches.

Same for the tomatoes that taste like styrofoam. Sorry, but I'll never buy a store bought tomato. Even those hydroponic ones aren't near as good as what we can grow ourselves.

I like fresh from the garden. Wish I had room to do it year round in a greenhouse here.....

I love the funky looking but wonderful tasting ones every time!! Tomatoes especially just don't always look perfect when they are the heirloom great tasting ones for sure.

I read that they regulate which tomatoes go to market by how they look- not how they taste! There is a tomato variety called the big ugly. It is supposed to taste better than any other variety that is mass sold, ship better and be more shelf stable- but it is all knobbly and ugly so the developers can't sell it.

Wild strawberries are a perfect example. I'd plant rows of them for the smell and taste, but they are so unpredictable. It wouldn't be profitable, and so many people wouldn't have strawberry jam in the morning if someone hadn't tinkered with selective breeding. Tristar...I'll have to remember that. I've got Teacup, and they are pretty, big, flashy, but they don't compare to the tiny little burst of a wild one.

I've said more than once, I grow food, not art. I grow a tristar strawberry that doesn't grow huge, perfect berries...but you will not find another variety with such exceptional taste. At least not one I've found anyway. Fortunately, my customers appreciate it.
