ONION HOE

You slide it across the ground and it cuts the weeds off just under the soil, with hardly any pressure at all. It doesn't disturb the soil like a hoe does. And the weeds grow back in about the same amount of time as they do when you pull them by hand.

My flower bed went from this ...

to this...

in 21 minutes, including raking the weeds away and hand pulling the weeds in between the rocks.
Every farngirl needs an onion hoe. I have one more picture too of our big garden. I have to upload it though and I'll post it.

Alison, it's shaped like a triangle, or maybe like a small boomerang.

I hate it when weeds get all tangled up with the good plants... I accidently murdered one of my tomato plants today while I was trying to cut back all the weeds!

Don't feel bad Alee. I just learned about it too. Too bad it was after my own garden got out of control. I just mow it.

Behind all those volunteer sunflowers in the middle, is a tangle of weeds and pumpkins. That my hoe can't even fix now. lol

I have a winged weeder that is very similar. Works great and much easier on the back that a regular hoe.

Well we usually just have our own gardens at our own homes, but we decided last winter to do one big one for farmer's market. We put it at the house at the shop where my in-laws were moving out of and my BIL and SIL were supposed to be moving into this month. But my BIL has to stay in Iraq now until October. And then with moving and garage sales and my dog training we decided not to do farmer's market this year, but still put in kind of a "test garden".

The end I'm taking the picture from is all pumpkins. Mostly jack-o-lantern types, but also giants, jack-be-little and the white lumina's. We have a harvest party at my house every year and this year we are going to do a hay ride to the big garden to pick out pumpkins.
After that is zucchini and cucumbers we will probably share with everybody. Then indian corn which we will dry for farmers market next year. Some sweet corn for fresh eating. Then popcorn in the back, to show all the kids where it comes from. Then pole beans for freezing or canning, tomatos for canning, potatos, carrots and a bunch of herbs. Oh yeah decorative gourds and sunflowers along the back for picking and the birds.
We still have our own gardens too. The best thing in mine is heirloom tomatos and heirloom melons. Which I'm going to grow on a larger scale for farmers market next year.

Thank you Shannon! What great info...I have never seen one of those before or if I did had no idea what it was! BTW- your big garden is great. What do you and your MIL have in there I see zucchini, corn, lettuce? What are your crops...Do you to do a farms market, give to neighbors or is it all for family use? Do you can and freeze. Sorry for all the questions it is just when I see a large garden that is not a "commercial" garden I always wonder about these things

The one we have is really old. I'll look at Coastal Farms the next time I go, for a brand name and price.

I have a similar one given to me by an elderly gentleman and he called it a Dutch hoe. It is the best thing ever and so much easier to work with than a regular hoe. Maybe you could search for it by that name. I know Lee Valley Tools carries them, but I'm not sure if that's a Canadian company or not.

Shannon,
What is the brand name of this?
I searched for onion hoe and only got straight blade types.
This makes me want to do my weeding, I really want one.

Here's a picture of our "Big Garden". My mother-in-law and I share it. It takes me 45 minutes to weed the whole entire thing by myself, with the onion hoe. You can't really tell how big the garden is in the picture, but it's big.

I am not sure where you can get them. It's an old tool. My mil said she saw them at Coastal Farms here in Oregon.
