This is our first year growing onions and I'm not sure what to do with them. I planted red onions using the little tiny onions from the feed store and sweet onions from seed. THe red onions are getting ready to flower, my husband cut the flower heads off, but we are not sure if that was right? When do you harvest them? We realy know nothing at all about them Help!

The onion-gospel according to my mom: if you want a large onion for slicing, then plant them shallow, and yes cut off any seed heads. If you just want green onions for eating on the side, then plant them deeper. Shallow means like no more than an inch deep.

Okay, just dug one up...nope, not ready. 26" long seed head to base of onion. I planted this one last fall, so it hasn't had much active growing time, but wintered well. The onion is about as big around as a man's thumb. So, I'm going to lop off most of the seed heads today. I think they are putting more energy into seeds than into the bulb. Wonder what onion scapes taste like? Think I'll find out.

Walking onions...found this website, good pictures.

We always have corn on all the corners, lol.
I'm always interested in trying new things! I have never heard of walking onions.

Did you dig up an onion yet? What did you find? It's raining here so I'm pretty reluctant to dig in the garden right now. Or I would dig up one of mine.

You've got me wondering now too...I'm in the same boat as you. I doubt my onions are big enough to harvest yet, but so many are sending up flower heads. Cutting them off should force the bulb to use that energy to grow bigger instead of making seed, I would think.

I know my onion sets from the store had a go-zillion bulblets, so maybe I should go dig one up to see how big it is? I could always try putting it back if it's too small, or cook it up tonight. What's one onion?

Come to think of it, seems like I remember giggling over spilled onions in the summer time. You know, going down the road at harvest time, and those corners usually had a few onions that took the opportunity to roll right off the top of the truck. If only I could remember what month that was...

I've got my eye on the seed heads too. I think I'll let some go to seed, collect it, and raise onion sprouts for sandwiches and BakeOvers. That way I can have my own organic seed. Don't know if it will work, but I'm up for an experiment.

Shannon, have you heard of "Walking Onions"? I've got some and I just love them! I'd be happy to share if you're interested. I use them like spring onions, and the seed heads form whole bulbs like cocktail onions, which pull the stem over and they replant themselves..."walking" out of the original bed, unless I harvest them. They are super easy and delicious.

We make a difference.
