Mom told me this morning that there was a ripe tomato in the garden. Tomatoes are her most favorite garden goodie of all, and I had promised she would get the first one.

I harvested three lovely fruits; one for Mom, one for Hubby and one for me. I just had a sliced tomato on buttered bread and my, are they good! Nice, round, firm fruit with a great sweet tomato taste.

If anyone lives in hotter dry climates (like the Desert Southwest, which is where I am) and is looking for a good tomato that does well in the heat, stays a manageable size and produces a goodly amount of tasty tomatoes, I strongly suggest Heartland. I planted them in late Feb or early March, and am anticipating several lbs of fruit each. The plants are very densely leafed (all the better to protect the fruit from the sun) and actually make an attractive hedge when caged.

oh yea... i never put tomatoes in the fridge... i never knew it was an actual chemical reaction/change though... i think of it like wine... never put a fine wine or home grown tomato in the fridge... when either are cold, you can't truly taste it.
can't wait til we start getting tomatoes!

Did you know that by refrigerating a tomato you kill the tomato flavor? By getting to cold the chemical in tomatos that gives it that flavor changes. Just found that out by watching Alton Brown's "Good Eats"

I notice that my plants have small blooms on them. So ready for a ripe one. I can't stand those you buy in the stores for they have no taste what so ever.

I'm jealous too! I just put my tomato plants out last week. Our final frost date is 5/15, though we had a frost advisory for Thursday night. Luckily it only got down to 37. It will be a few months before we can eat our home grown maters! I hope you enjoy yours now!

Maria, are you saving any seed from these hot zone tomatoes? So jealous! Good for you, enjoy the heck out of them. MMM, I can't wait, but I have to. Salsa...oh, yum. Lucky duck. :)

We make a difference.

Around here, by July the plants will probably be on the downside. We've already had a few 100+ degree days.

Beecharmer, I'd love to hear how your tomatoes go! I've seen Brandywine seeds and starts but didn't take a chance this year on something I don't know how it can handle the heat.

Aunt Jenny-

How many tomato plants are you putting in? I am so anxious for my little tomato plants to take off and flower! I want to see the baby tomatos growing in! :)
Aunt Jenny Posted - May 18 2007 : 12:55:14 PM
yum!! Tomatoes are my favorite !! I eat cottage cheese and fresh tomatoes as often as possible in the summer and fall. I won't have a ripe tomato for quite some time (sigh) but I am planting lots!!!!!

You are making my mouth water and stomach seize for fresh tomatoes! LOL I bought about 2 dozen tomatoes to put into my garden and my fiance helped plant a few and did some of the heavy digging to expand the garden. It was his mother's day gift to me since he hates gardening :)

Hi Maria- Our season does not start as early as yours but we are also a desert. Last year we had a month of 100+ days. We had planted "Juliet" a small roma type tomato. It withstood the heat beautifully and made pretty good pasta sauce. Needs good caging or staking. Not too sprawling. A couple plants would be all a family needs. We of course planted 50 or so. Had more than we could eat, sell and give away. I'll let you know how this years brandywine and black by tula withstand the heat but it wont be until Julyish.
