While they can't fly in the air, penguins are incredible underwater swimmers, using their wings as flippers.
Most penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere, with some even found in the Galapagos Islands, which is north of the equator.
Their black and white coloring acts as camouflage in the water, making it harder for predators to spot them from above or below.
Penguins can drink saltwater because they have a gland above their eyes that filters out the excess salt, which they then excrete.
Penguins are social animals that live in large colonies. They also huddle together for warmth, especially during cold weather.
Many penguin species are devoted parents, with both the male and female taking turns incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks.
Penguins have distinct calls that allow them to recognize each other within their large colonies.
Unlike most birds, penguins molt all their feathers at once, spending a few weeks on land while their new feathers grow.
While some penguins build nests out of pebbles or other materials, others simply lay their eggs on the ground.
Penguins generally live for 15-20 years, but this can vary depending on the species.
Emperor penguins are known for their incredible diving abilities, holding their breath for long periods and reaching great depths.

Skin Absorption:
Frogs drink and absorb water and oxygen through their permeable skin, but they must keep it moist to survive.
Eyes for Swallowing:
Frogs retract their eyeballs into their heads to help push food down their throats.
Powerful Legs:
Their strong, muscled legs enable frogs to make incredible leaps, sometimes more than 20 times their own body length.
Cold-Blooded Animals:
As cold-blooded creatures, frogs rely on their environment to regulate their body temperature, which is why many hibernate in colder climates.
Tadpoles to Adults:
Frogs start life as eggs laid in water, which hatch into tadpoles that primarily eat plants. They then undergo metamorphosis, transforming into adult frogs.
Toads are Frogs:
All toads are a type of frog, specifically those that tend to have drier, wartier skin.
Diverse Lifestyles:
While some frogs are great at climbing trees thanks to sticky toe pads, others can glide through the air with webbed feet.
Vocalizations:
The sounds frogs make, known as croaks, are produced using vocal sacs. Male frogs use these calls to attract mates, and each species has a unique call.
Global Presence:
Frogs are found on every continent except Antarctica. They require a wet environment to survive and are excellent indicators of ecosystem health. |

Fireflies produce light using the chemicals luciferin and luciferase, which combine with oxygen to create a flash with almost no heat.
Each species has a distinct flashing pattern used to attract mates.
Fireflies are toxic to many potential predators, and their light serves as a warning signal.
They go through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
The larval stage is the longest, and many larvae also glow.
Adult fireflies typically feed on nectar or pollen, though some do not eat at all.
Firefly larvae help control populations of worms and slugs.
Firefly larvae loosen soil, which helps with oxygen, sunlight, and water penetration.
Despite their toxicity, fireflies are eaten by some predators, such as spiders and frogs.
Habitat Loss: Firefly populations are declining due to habitat loss from development.

| When I was nine we lived in the city. Dad bought a car and our first trip was to Oklahoma to visit my grandparents. Grandpa took me out at night with one of Grandma's canning jars and we caught fireflies. The next day he taught me how to drive his jeep. I think that was one of my most memorable vacations. I have often wished we had fireflies here and have wondered why we don't. |

| We used to get jars and put grass in them poke holes in the lids and catch as .any as we could. When it was time to go in we always let them go. Part of some wonderful childhood memories. |

They can sleep standing up. Horses use a "stay apparatus" in their legs to lock their joints, allowing them to rest or sleep without falling.
Their eyes are the largest of any land mammal. Horse eyes are large and positioned on the sides of their heads, providing them with nearly 360-degree vision.
They cannot burp or vomit. Horses have a powerful lower esophageal sphincter (LES) that prevents them from regurgitating food or air, a trait they share with some other animals.
Foals can walk and run soon after birth. A newborn foal is precocious and can stand and even gallop within a few hours of its birth.
They are exceptional herd animals. Horses are very social and will get lonely if kept alone, forming strong bonds with other horses.
Their hearing is excellent. With 10 ear muscles (compared to a human's three), horses have exceptional hearing and can often point their ears in different directions to focus on multiple sounds simultaneously.
A horse's teeth never stop growing. To keep up with the constant wearing down from grazing, a horse's teeth grow throughout their lives, a process that also helps estimate their age.
They are obligate nasal breathers. Unlike humans, horses can only breathe through their nose and cannot breathe through their mouths.
Horses have great memories. They are intelligent creatures with excellent memories, capable of remembering individuals and locations.
They have a strong sense of smell and taste. While they have a broad diet, horses have a preference for sweet flavors and will generally reject sour or bitter ones. |

| These facts about horses are fascinating to learn about. I have always loved horses and when I was young I rode for many years. When our girls got older, they started taking riding lessons and we were able to purchase each of them a horse that they had lessons on. Nothing fancy but they loved having them for many years. |

As a child living in the city I wanted a horse. I told my parents we could keep him in the garage. For some reason they laughed about that..... Finally as an adult living in the country I got my horse Sugarplum, a rather worn out nag, at the livestock auction for $95. We had a few good years together before she died from sickle cell anemia. I never knew horses could get that.

| I played with the plastic horses that had saddles and I think they fit Barbie dolls. Maybe not about the dolls, but they were about that size. I remember I had Roy, Rogers horse and Dale Evans horse. |
