I went to post office yesterday to get some stamps and the woman there told me postage is going up again. Five cents more per stamp. Who would have dreamed that we would ever be paying 73 cents to send a letter? When JT and I were long distance dating in the 80s it was 18 cents a stamp. I know that was a long time ago but even by then the prices didn't go up this much. The postal worker said they are allowed to raise prices 2 times a year. When I said they are trying to force us to do everything online, she agreed.

Letters were 3 cents from 1932 to 1958. Postcards were a penny until 1952. As a stamp collector I remember that the increase to 4 cents was a big deal. In 1971 the post office reorganized from a government cabinet to a more independent entity but still controlled by the government. Costs then went up every several years until now they are raised twice a year. Raging inflation. There used to be no more than 10-12 new stamps produced each year, beautiful engraved pieces of art. Now it is 25-30 glossy printed issues each year. The post office is spending too much money creating stamps that most collectors no longer want and we are paying for it. Maybe Amazon should take over mail delivery--LOL.

Well let's hope something gets done about it. This is ridiculous. I'm going to have to write my letters longer and send them less often.
