I wanted so remind our HenHouse that the annual Jubilee celebration here at MJF will be this coming weekend. Check out the many threads over at the Chatroom if you would like to see what others are doing. The theme this year is pollinators so there are lots of ideas for plants in your gardens, yards or back porches.

If you have never done our Jubilee Badge, it is easy and fun to do as well. Let's share here in our HenHouse any of your plans for the upcoming celebration. Of course photos are always welcome if possible.

Today, I finished making a small pillow for my porch and wanted to share a great little book about the many plants, shrubs and trees that attract bees, butterflies, moths, and some Hummingbirds.

Winnie,
Thanks for posting about the Jubilee. I have been meaning to post but time has gotten away from me with some things.
I know there are some here in the henhouse that are preparing for it. I am mostly ready now.
Cute pillow!

Winnie on your MJF post I wrote I wanted to display a book too. I found three - Tasha Tudor's Garden - The Orchard Mason Bee - and the Rose Rustlers. Thinking about putting them on the metal table on carport sitting area so I can look through them when I'm out there with Annie. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks Denise, they are already out there. Had to weigh the one about mason bees down because of the wind. Thinking about putting a basket of old magazines out there - read them one more time then pass them on.

Was out checking out the apple blossoms. Didn't seem like we had many but then saw a few more and saw a little bee in one. Made me happy because I didn't think we had many bees . We don't have them like we used to. I may have to get the same book Winnie has to see what I can plant to bring them here.

You know how I love to hear that apple blossoms are happening!!LOL!!! Keep us posted, Denise, on whether you start to see those little darlin's turning into apples for Fall.

Sara, I also like to keep magazines and a few books on my porch area to enjoy when sitting outside. We have a few bird books that have waterproof covers that can actually be out there all the time. We love to look up the friends that stop by to eat and get some water or a bath.

Sara, I tried raising some Mason Bees that are local to this area. They hatched and flew out but never returned!! I was so disappointed. One friend, who lives in Kentucky has successfully raised them for years but she lives on a farm. I am thinking my city location was not an area that my bees wanted to stay and so they left.

Mason Bee house

This photo shows the little larvae that turned into the bees.

Winnie several years ago I saw wild bees so I bought the book on Mason bees and the tubes to make a house - they never used the tubes and since then I have seen few bees. I may try again in the front yard that has more sun. Have seen only one yellow butterfly so far - it's sad to see fewer and fewer bees and butterflies each year.

We are expecting thunderstorms Thurs so I will have to remember to bring the books and magazines in.

Sara, it might be a good idea to try again in another area of your yard. I think it would have been a lot of fun to see them use their house..It seems like this year, there were not as many bumblebees or honey bees when the azaleas were in bloom. It worries me.

I just wanted to stop by to say Happy Farmgirl Jubilee today!! Here are a few photos to share. To kick off the weekend, last night I made MaryJane's Spaghetti pie from her Cast iron cookbook and roasted some fresh brussel sprouts in the oven to go with it. It was a tasty dinner!!

Then this morning, I made Maple Sticky Buns from the same Cast Iron Cookbook. They were delicious too!!

Thankfully, there are ample leftovers to enjoy tomorrow!!

There is a nice breeze today so my apron is just flying in the wind. I love the Farmgirl Jubilee weekend because it is a fun way to just celebrate MaryJane's Farmgirl paradigm that has brought us all together!!

Farmgirls Rock!!

Winnie it all looks soooo yummy.

I have 2 bowls of batter bread rising - should be ready in six or eight hours to bake. From MJ's Wild Bread book.

Love my Granny's cast Iron skillet. I have been cooking out of them since I married in 1973! Still using them!

Connie, I have my Mom's cast iron skillets(small, medium, large), her griddle pan, my Grandmother's corn muffin pan, and a recent grill pan with lid that I got to make sandwiches or grill meat inside, and a dutch oven with lid. Cast iron cooks more evenly, I find, and I love that they don't wear out, chip, or warp. MaryJane's information inside her cookbook on basic cast iron care is also useful and helpful. While heavier to work with, I think cast iron is a better investment of money for cookware. MaryJane's book has me thinking of getting a few additional pieces. The Lodge company has a great website where you can see the entire range of cookware and order what you want.

I love my cast iron. I have some pieces of my parent's and I have gotten one at a yard sale. It is one of my favorites to use. We have also gotten some from Lodge. They sell them preseasoned.

I have some that were my grandparents but they came from Holland and those pieces are painted on the ouside and white on the inside. I don't use them because I don't know what the white is made from.
Here's a picture of them.

Denise’s, I have seen pieces identical to these. They are like the Le Creuset brand where the exterior is a hard ceramic base over the cast iron. I bet they are totallly safe to use. Look up on EBay and see if you can find any and see if they are listed as food safe. I think you are safe.

Well, my mistake these came from Holland with my great grandparents and were used by them and my grandmother used them also. They are very old so not sure if the inside material has broken down at all. That is many years ago. It looks scratched but that is all. I will have to look them up by the information on the pieces and see what I find on the internet about them.
