Hi ladies! Thanks for having me over here!!
I will be honest, I get busy and don't get on MJFG all the time, but I do love the fellowship!
I am a SAHM to 3 children, Isabelle 14 today, Gabriel 5, and Sawyer 3. I also have 2 Angel babies; one a miscarry at 16 wks, and my Levi who passed away after a car accident in 07. He would be 10 on May 11.
I always loathe introductions, because something ALWAYS gets left out... I homeschool, run a small sewing and embroidery biz, and we are starting a family farm in Charlestown, IN (30 min N of Louisville, KY). The farm is 46 acres and has a cabin built in 1830 on it.I love to cook from scratch. I very much want horses (again, I grew up with horses) and a milk cow.
We have chickens, rabbits, cats, and 2 dogs; Araya, a 17 mo German Shepherd, and Maebh (pronounce Maeve, but I call her Mae), my 5 mo Border Collie puppy.
Please check out my blog and follow our farming journey!! :) https://derbauernhofsite.wordpress.com
I also have a FB page for the farm: https://www.facebook.com/WinklerDerBauernhof
And I sorta love pinterest, too! https://www.pinterest.com/dandeerose/ |

Happy you are here! You sound very busy. I am intrigued by your cabin. Would it be too much trouble to send a pic of it? |

Your cabin is awesome. Is it modern or rustic inside? (I'm hoping it has a huge walk in, cook in fireplace. |

Well...considering we have to get all the way to the other part of the country (we are going to go through Maine I believe to get back into Canada) then it's not too bad! It takes us 8 days through Canada to get from point to point, which is what we are doing, since Prince Edward Island is literally on the other side of Canada from BC! |

My hubby said there's two options: 1) go down through the south and see many states we've never seen before or cut over into Canada by Ontario and visit my brother and possibly pick up some goats as well...I think this decision will need some thinking ;) |

Alicia that must have been a mansion among log cabins in 1830. What a treasure you and your family have. Do you plan to live in it full time? What a wonderful place for your children to grow up.Does it have a bathroom? Now days bathrooms are expected, but only 60 years ago homes did not all have them. When my uncle built a farm house for his family, he put in a smaller room that was their daughters play room. Before she married he plumbed it with a sink, tub and potty. She is a year older than me.

That is so neat, Alicia!! I'm leaning towards visiting the southern states because I know we will be going to Ontario more often to visit family, but not to the southern states. And...then I can convince hubby that I need to meet you and Erin :) Where do you live right now? In the cabin?
Marilyn - you are absolutely right! We bought a house 75 years old, and what is the teeny tiny bathroom used to be the pantry...you can imagine how small and crowded our bathroom is with a tub, toilet and sink in an old pantry! The previous owners bought this place some 60 years ago, and put in all the plumbing and lifted up the house so they could bit a bit of a basement in. They were telling us that our living room is where the chickens used to be!! I find it all so fascinating! |

We talked to a local history enthusiast at length yesterday (we met him at on of the Farm Auctions back in Oct). Great guy! He will be a lot of help to us. He sorta runs the John Work house and Tunnel Mill Historical Site I blogged about in the wee hours this morning. Anyway, there are several HUGE house along Tunnel Mill Rd, built by John and his family, BEFORE ours was built, so even though it is 4 rms and is big, there were bigger homes in the area. BTW, as much as I keep calling it a log cabin, our place is actually a log home. Cabins were very small typically one room. I used to think this must have been a wealthy family to have such a HUGE "cabin", but after learning the Work house was built so much earlier, I realized they probably just had a big family and were regular people. :) Also, as we have been reminded multiple times, this home would have been sided! And Uncle Art had a picture of it sided before they removed it for "looks". This was harmful to the integrity of the home, the siding would have protected it better. Now we have some logs that greatly concern us. We will be siding it. We would like to use dear, but not sure we can afford it.

We live an hour and a half West of the cabin. Matt has a good job down here. We are working on finding another good job over there, but are not going to rush. The plan is to get debt free. So either sell this house, as is, or pay it off, fix it up, then sell. I will be paying off our car this week!! So the house is almost the last thing other than utilities and such! But I will plan to have you at the farm if you come down. :) You could camp out, or, Charlestown has a new hotel!
As far as a bathroom, we are making plans to add a section onto the back that will look alike on the outside, but will house electric outlets, kitchen, bathroom, and laundry space. Under it will be our root cellar. If we go for another floor on top, a sewing and schooling space. For now we plan to put in an old fashioned outhouse. ;) We are still trying to decide where our water will come from. We have a few possibilities; city water, a well, and spring water. There are caves under us, sorta, and we aren't too sure about how deep a well will need to go. We are trying to locate a local digger to come talk and look, but no such luck. Last week, we found the local Amish (they just moved out our way 5 years ago, and only 10 families), Naomi Schwartz told us they have city, because whomever they talked to said they would only pull 25 Gal/day. Not enough for stock, gardening, and personal use. We believe a spring runs to either side of the home. We are going to keep an eye on them to see if they dry up. We talked about damming one up and putting in a cistern. It makes since that the family who built the home would have been near water.
We know families lived in the home until sometime in the 60's, so it isn't out of reach! :D |
