I'm starting this thread for anyone who feels compelled to apply for this status. Requirements are as follows:

- Share your expertise on at least three subjects with your chapter
- Create a lesson plan and projects for sisters to engage in to ensure her knowledge has been successfully conveyed

These projects can fulfill requirements for merit badges or be a lesson of your own making.

Once lessons are given, send an email to meritbadges@maryjanesfarm.org describing the presentations given to fellow sisters. A certificate will then be awarded and the title of Chapter Guru will be applied to your Farmgirl connection chat room ID.

All of this info is available in the merit badge list, but I thought it would be helpful to have it here too.

I'll be considering how I can personally fulfill this, but I know we have some talented people in our little group that may want to apply for this, while helping others to earn badges. Joyce's background in music is an example. I'm not trying to call you out Joyce. I know you're busy having just moved and homeschooling your kids. I'm just using you as an example, and I hope you don't mind :)

Just something to think about, that we could help each other earn badges with!

I think this is a great idea! I am on board with this idea....I just need to think of what I could do a lesson plan on. Is there anything in particular that anyone might need help with? I'm fairly handy in the "home ec" areas....sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, baking, canning, etc. I knit, but I'm thinking that Abi might be our knitting guru!

I could personally use instruction on how to read crochet charts. I want to expand my abilities, but get lost in the translation of the charts and give up too soon. Is this something we could virtually? Does anyone have any ideas?

Sherone, I am with you on that! I can crochet very simple things, same with knitting but I agree, I get lost in the instructions!

Joyce that's so funny. I'm glad we were on the same page there!

When considering how to do this chapter guru thing, the difficulty I'm having is this... Say you want to offer something that is going to help with a badge. How are you not just going to use what's already in the requirements for the badge? Would it just be the requirements plus a little extra in that case? I mean as far as lesson plans go? Or maybe just being more specific about what steps to take for something that could be applied to a badge. What do you think?

I think it depends on what you were going to present. For example, for My Fair Farmgirl, you could step someone through how to make an item, such as a lip balm.

I AM working on a tutorial for crocheting (although I'm behind now!). It won't be focused on charts though-at least not to start with, maybe we will get to that later. I find written instructions easier!!

I would love to do the chapter Guru badge and I have already done 1 tutorial for my local girls. I'll let y'all know when the crochet classes are ready-before my trip I was having some technical difficulties with my recording equipment so still trying to figure it out!

I have gotten fairly good at crochet and can read the patterns. I was brainstorming how to help and was wondering if any of you ladies used Skype. I was thinking if you have a specific pattern or I could find one that I could look over and chat either on the forum or use skype to work through the pattern and how to keep track of where you are in it. I could also work with someone over the phone if that would work. I was thinking of making a video of a specific pattern but I don't know where to post one.

I am going to assume by crochet charts you mean ones that are for say Filet crochet or something like that. I have done those but I find written patterns much easier. I would be interested in the bug balm. Is it for avoiding bites or for after bites?

Emily I've never used Skype... But I could. I don't have any crochet patterns I'm working on right now, but this might be helpful, and applicable if you know a pattern that goes just a bit beyond the basics that you could teach us. I can only make dishcloths and scarfs. So basically I just know how to chain and whatever a basic stitch is. I don't even know what a basic stitch is called.. Haha! :)

My compter at home is as old as my oldest child, I swear. There is no camera, so no Skype for me. My problem with crochet charts is mostly the abbreviations. Some of the don't have keys for them. Is there a comprehensive key for crochet abbreviations?

There are books that have the stitches. I have found that I prefer to learn a new stitch by typing in the stitch name and watching a youtube video of it. I am left handed so reading the instructions become difficult when I have to switch all the right and left hand parts. By searching videos online of a specific stitch I can just watch how it is done.

I agree...utube is great for that. I have to keep going back to watch how to make a "magic circle " because I can't seem to remember between projects.

I'm with you, Debbie. The magic circle looks so simple...but, I have yet to learn it. You Tube is my friend.
