Here's the next badge we'll work on together!

My Fair Farmgirl...

The beginner level is:

a) Researching the difference between cruelty-free and organic beauty products vs. commercially made.
b) Replacing products as you run out with a healthy, natural (preferably organic) version.
c) Make one simple product (such as lip balm, deodorant, scented bath salts) using natural ingredients.

I think we should have a 2 week deadline for this. Although "deadline" is a pretty loose term here :) So we should have the beginner phase done by Monday, November 9. Participation is voluntary, of course. I would also like us to share our recipes for our homemade products with each other, just in an email, like we do with the recipes each week. Let me know if you're in!

Oh yeah, I was going to say... Shannon just work on the expert. I'm planning to start another one too. I don't think this one will take that long. Do you have any suggestions Shannon?

I'm looking forward to working on this badge. I'm afraid I will be gone for a couple of weeks beginning tomorrow. So, I won't begin until I return.

So, I had to order some things for my recipe for this badge. Hopefully they will get here in time for me to post by Monday, but if not, I might be a few days late :/

Erin - what are you working on? I've made deodorant, bath salts, bath bombs, goat milk soap, and lip balm. I think that s it ;)

Shannon! That's a lot! I've done bath salts, soap, toothpaste, but I've never done lip balm, so I ordered the stuff for that. The essential oils I have are mostly for cleaning, so I had to order a couple more, and those are what I'm waiting on. I ordered grapefruit and lime. I'm also going to attempt to dye the balm with beet root. We'll see how it works out.

Oh yes.. I forgot about the toothpaste! I have debated trying the "no-poo" stuff, but am petrified of what my hair would look like for the time frame it takes to balance itself out oil-wise!

Same here. I have a lot of hair. It's thick and coarse. I just cut off a foot, but even after that it's still to the middle of my back. One thing I've been interested in is trying the oil cleansing method for face washing. I have a pretty good stock of face wash right now, so I would wait until that runs out, but it looks interesting. Oh, I have made body wash before too, and makeup remover.

Well... my essential oils still have not arrived :( That's what I'm waiting on to start this project. As soon as they get here I'll make my lip balm, get the recipe out, post my research, and apply for the badge. I'm also planning on giving these away for Christmas. The recipe I found makes 24.

I finally have my essential oils I've been waiting for, however I'm going to have to wait until I get back from Illinois (see post under "Just Talking") to make my lip balm. I'm planning to get that done this weekend sometime, and I'll get the recipe emailed out then too. Thanks for your patience!

I have the beginner Fair Farmgirl finished and am working on the next level. I had made a homemade deordorant this past summer from a recipe I found in Mary Jane's magazine awhile back. I was a little skeptical but I thought if it would pass my Farmer Husband test, it was a winner...and it WAS!!! I've made 3 batches since then and have added different EO scents, seeing which ones we like the best. My next project is a sugar scrub. I have a good source to buy my essential oils, but do any of you have a good source to buy other ingredients, like shea butter and similar products?

http://www.livingthenourishedlife.com/2015/02/make-lip-balm-recipe

I finally finished the beginner level for this badge. I made lip balm (chap stick) and it was so easy. The link above is the recipe I used. The recipe says it makes 25 but I only got 17 out of one batch and 15 from another. I made grapefruit and lime, and the tinted one is lavender. The coconut oil I used is very fragrant so the coconut flavor comes through, but you could use other oils.
