Just a reminder that tomorrow, 9/27/15, I will be choosing the winner for our Apple Festival Giveaway. If you have not signed up, today is the last day to enter!

Mmmmmmm, I am already thinking about apple pies baking today and tomorrow across the US and possibly Canada. All that cinnamon and apple goodness just filling the air from coast to coast!

Good Morning Farmgirls! We got home from our trip to New Mexico last night and I thought, it is time to offer a fun giveaway here in ourHenHouse for the last full week of the MJF Apple Festival. Oh how fun! We are headed to North Carolina on Friday for our annual apple picking field trip. With having to feed Emi halfway there, when we get there, before we leave, and again halfway home, I probably will not start processing them that day. Instead, we will start early Saturday morning... apple pie filling, apple pie jam, dehydrated apples, apple peel jelly, and of course make my apple pie for Sunday. We will be picking and using primarily mutsu apples. With that said, the younger children and I use Before Five in a Row and Five in a Row as part of their curriculum... this is where you read the same book for five days in a row (or in our case, more) and do activities to go along with the book. This week and for the next couple weeks, we are reading "How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World." It is a cute book about a girl who wants to make an apple pie, but the market is closed, so she travels to different countries to get the ingredients, such as Sri Lanka for the cinnamon. One of the activities we are going to do is buy two apples of every variety we can find (both at the orchard and if there are any others at the grocery store) and try them to see what kind is everyone's favorite. I'm looking forward to trying lots of different types of apples! We are also hoping to bring some pies to our neighbors :)

Shannon, I love your school curriculum with the children! It sounds very fun and interesting. Enjoy your Annual apple picking trek to NC for your Mutsu. All of your apple preserving plans sound wonderful as well so that you can enjoy them all year around!

Glad you're home safe and sound, Winnie! Lily and her mommie are going away this weekend, so we visited the farm again today for more apples. We have been learning a lot about apples from our friends at the farm! Granny Smith was her choice today, so that's what I'll use in the French Apple Pie recipe I got from my swap partner on the main sight. Sunday will be pie baking day, and I'm also going to make some apple muffins to take to our family doctor who is retiring and his staff. I'm also making an apple and (veggie) sausage strata for Sunday brunch. Today, we made these cupcakes, I think they came out pretty well.

We have to wait another week or two to pick apples at my daughter's neighbor's house. Nobody is quite sure what kind of apple tree it is, but they're not quite ready. It will be really fun to pick them when they are ready, and make apple butter, our favorite!

Happy Day!

I'm going to be making Apple Oatmeal muffins and apple pie to celebrate. Muffins for breakfast, pie for dessert. I am going to make apple pie ahead to pop in the freezer for later.

Apples have been our menu here for a few weeks. Caramel Apple Pie will be on our menu on Sunday. Bonnie we had fried apples and pork chops for supper last Unday, so yum Yummy! Now that Sherry has mentioned Apple tortilla roll ups, I have a craving for those. I make whole wheat tortillas for us since those are the only ones Oliver can have, might have to make a batch before I head to the sunflower field.

Holy Cow, I WON! Thank You Winnie for all the apple festivities you have gotten us involved in this season. I had a lovely Apple puff pancake after church and have a caramel apple pie waiting for desert for supper tonight.

I like that word, Bonnie! Lily and I did some "Appling" yesterday and picked some apples. Yummy Macintoshes, which we're going to put in our apple butter.

I think we can make "Appling" an official word here at MJF. After all, we just finished a wonderful Apple Festival month and the joy just continues! You can never get enough fresh juicy fall apples! My motto is, if you can't pick apples, craft apples!! LOL!!
