Good Morning Farmgirls! I just finished posting, on our main Forum, information on the official Farmgirl Apple Festival at MJF! The Home office and I have been planning some fun this month that we hope will make it a special time here at "the Farm". The main post information is under the Farm Kitchen Link and I posted an Apple related swap under the Swap link.

There is also an Apple Badge too! Check out your new September Sister Online Issue for all the requirements and information.

I hope you will join in on some of the fun. The month ends with our First Annual Farmgirl Apple Pie Sunday on September 27, 2015. I can already smell the cinnamon and apples wafting through the air across the states and around the world!!! LOL!!

It is officially Apple Festival time here at MJF and I am so excited to share and learn with all of you!!

Yesterday I went out to a farmstead that is outside the city in a rural area. In the past, they carried fresh apples from North Carolina during the season so I wanted to know if they would have them again this year. Lo and behold they had a few early varieties already there and selling!! I was able to pick up three varieties to try and so far, they are delicious!!

From left to right, there is Jonagold, Fuji, and silly me forgot the other name!!! LOL!! So far, I tasted the Jonagold and Fuji and they were delicious. I will try the other today and then decide which to go back for more. And I WILL find out that other name and write it down. LOL!! I want to try and make some apple jam that ll of you have been talking about. . This find will also help me with one of the requirements in the new Farm Badge. I am sort of working on the Beginner and Intermediate levels at the same time.

This little Farm Stand also does business with an Amish Community in NC and carries their cheese and canned goods. They had an interesting jar of apple pie filling that reminds me to maybe try my hand at MaryJanes' pie filling from her Ideas book. Now that I have real delicious apples close by, let the kitchen projects begin!! I need me an apple apron!!

Winnie, love your apples selection! When I went to the local farmstand to get apples, I didn't remember two of them, but used them in my Apple Pie Jam!
You do need an apple apron, as do I :)! That is one I do not have in my collection. hhhuuummmmm something to think about!
Have a blessed day!

Winnie I am not sure what varieties the Apple trees are, they were planted many years ago and my mother-in-law who planted them cannot remember the names. I picked 2 more tubs last night, so I will be canning apple pie filling this week too.

A little rain can straighten a flower stem. A little love can change a life.

I love fuji apples to eat, but by far my favorite for canning purposes is Mutsu... It is sweet yet tart, perfect for apple pie jam, apple peel jelly, apple butter, apple pie filling, and dehydrated apples. Oh my I am lookin g forward to picking here soon. We head up to Norrth Carolina to an orchard oncea year to pick apples and usually pick four or five bushels. We plan to do it again this year, probably more towards the end of September so I will be more comfortable.

I live in apple country! Lots and lots of apple orchards here. They grow a lot of Macintosh! My favourite are Fiji apples! I have never canned apples. I used to can a lot when I lived in the city but here, in the country, I do not. I haven't found a farmer's market to buy bushels of stuff. My little garden does not produce enough for me to can anything. We do dry our tomato for "sun dried tomatoes". They re yummy!

Lots of apple favorites! In working on my Apple Badge, I leaned the following interesting facts. There are about 50 species of apples around the world. With grafting apple trees, there are literally thousands of local varieties. Apples were so popular in America that by the Civil War, there was an estimated 15-25,000 named local favorites in the nation!! Most of those heirloom varieties no longer exist , but there are still many local varieties, specific to a region, that have been kept alive and thriving. Some are good for ciders while others are old standards for pies, sauce making, eating or other uses. Amazing history!
