The Herb Review is opened for all to post their reviews of anything related to growing & using herbs.

I will write a review of Herb Quarterly Magazine by July 1.

Not sure what all is desired in the a review, but here it goes ;)

I read "Your Backyard Herb Garden" today while doing my 3 hour glucose test, by Miranda Smith. It was a pretty quick and easy read, and relatively informative. The first chapter was on planning and preparing your herb garden. As one that is pretty clueless on how to design a garden, I found this action pretty enlightening :) They covered both formal and informal gardens, as well as the idea of how to use height and color. Then it went into the growing and caring for your herbs... think basic gardening instructions, but for herbs. The next two sections were using and enjoying your herbs, as well as herbs for health and beauty. Neither of these two sections were very in depth, but rather barely skimmed the surface. With that said, if you are new to herbs, tis is a great place to start. The last section was an overview of quite a few herbs.

I found this book to be pretty basic, yet great for the gardening aspect. If you are looking for instruction on how to actually grow herbs, this may be a good place to start. If you are looking for ways to use the herbs you grow, especially if you are looking for medicinal uses, this probably is not the book for you!

Shannon well done. I enjoyed reading your review. You gave enough information and insight that would lead someone to either read the book or decide it's not what they need.

I'm reviewing the 2014 Winter Issue of Herb Quarterly Magazine.

I have been taking Herb Quarterly for a year now, and find it a wealth of information on growing and using herbs. The simplest way for me to tell you about what it offers is to list the contents.

Contents
Growing Herb Microgreens
10 Herbs for Winter Health
Steamy Soups & Warm Salads
Herbal Antibiotics
Natural Astringents
Growing Herbs in Tough Places
Delicious Holiday Bites

A few of the departments that are in every issue:
Garden Gate
Herbal Healthwatch
Herbalist's Notebook
Beauty in Bloom
Medicine Chest
The Organic Gardener

Herb Quarterly
www.HERBQUARTERLY.com
1 year $19.97 4 issues

The hardest thing about Herb Quarterly is waiting for the next issue.

Sara thanks for the review! I will definitely consider subscribing to this magazine. I'm still waiting to see what actually comes up that I've planted from seed. I'm a little impatient to find out!

Sara, thanks for your review of the Herb Quarterly. I received that quarterly for many years. I think my favorite part was their garden designs. I think I tried several over the years, and have several for my "Auld Grammy's Pretties" binder.

This sounds great - thank you for your review, Sara! I have a question - do they discuss medicinal ways to use herbs, and ways to make your own cleansers?

Thanks Erin, if you do subscribe to it I believe you will be happy.

Thanks Judith, I too keep garden designs. Where I used to live I had a wagon wheel herb garden planted with herbs I thought women settling Texas would have bought with them. If I could find another wagon wheel or some other design that would fit I would like to do that garden again.

Thanks Joyce, besides what I listed in the review here's what has been in the issues I have.

Summer 2015 - latest issue
Soothing Stress with Nervine Herbs
Fight Allergies with Herbs
Super Infusion Teas for Health
Summer Herbal First-Aid Guide

Winter 2013
Healing with Evergreens
Herbs: Safety First
Healing with Red Clover
Holiday Inspired Beauty

Summer 2014
Herbs for Lyme Disease
Healing from the Wild
Herbs for Summer Skin

Fall 2014
Mushroom Medicine
Herbs for Women

In my issues there were no articles on cleansing either household or body. You may want to check out their web site which offers back issues. www.HerbQuarterly.com

Dumb question #1: (I know "there are no dumb questions) Is the book review something we can each do on this thread?

GROWING HERBS AT HOME: A GUIDE TO INDOOR & BACKYARD & CULINARY & MEDICINAL HERB GARDENING FOR BEGINNER (it doesn't have just a single author; it is a compilation from several writer's books.)

After looking through dozens of "beginner" books, articles, etc. this book seems to provide a good mix of everything I was looking for with regards to the "How to" of growing, saving and using herbs, and their many uses.

I have scanned through the entire book, and now I have giving it a thorough read. So far, so good. We beginners need all the help we can get.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
Introduction: is herb gardening for you?
Chap 2: how to plan for an indoor herb garden
Chap 3: how to effectively plan for a backyard garden
Chap 4: the easiest culinary herbs to grow
Chap 5: the top 5 medicinal herbs you must have in your garden
Chap 6: a closer look at annuals, biennials, and perennials
Chap 7: harvest, preserve, and dry your herbs like a pro
Conclusion: the 5 secrets to successful herb gardening

Amazon offers a free sample of this book that can be viewed/read on-line, if anyone is interested.

Sara, I am going to check out Herb Quarterly. Thank you for listing some of their topics. Are evergreens considered a herb?...who knew???

This week, after the rain stops, I will be planting Basil, Chives and Lavender

Kathleen, I like your review. You did a good job of giving us enough info to know if we are interested in reading the book. I will have to check out reading it for free on Amazon. Thanks for that head's up.

I'm a little further down the road than a beginner but a long way from being a master of growing & using herbs. I have found that I always learn something from beginner books or a new way of looking at what I already know.

I can see how these reviews will help us add to our garden libraries and what to look for at local libraries.
