Just came home and found one of my girls, Bo, deceased! She had lost some color! I did some research but couldn't find much out there that was useful. Not sure what the problem was but it was all so quick.

I had plans to do a lot today like work on the merit badge, but I'm really not in the mood at the moment. Sigh... I guess I could never be a real farm girl! I'm too emotional!

Thanks! I have so much to learn when it comes to chickens. Just ordered a book on chicken illnesses and how to diagnose/treatment. Bo was less then a year old! Did go to Tractor Supplies, the only farm store open, and they could not give me a reference for a vet who knew about chickens. There were lots on cows etc... Made me wonder if chickens are considered dispensable. Well, not my girls!

I will be going to the local feed store to pick out new chicks. I really enjoy having chickens, they are so entertaining.

Thank you for your kindness!

Have a great day!

Carole, so sorry to hear about Bo! What breed was she? I have 2 girls that will be 1yr late April. Ginger Rogers is a buff orpington & Myrna Loy is a New Hampshire Red. I know exactly how you feel about losing one of your girls. When we started out; we had 3. When they were pullets, one of our dogs got a hold of one. I took her to our vet.....spent $65 getting a cast put on her leg!....Yes, you read that right :) She passed away about 48 hours later. I'm sure she had internal injuries & I'm sure the stress of it all didn't help. Chickens stress easily & it's hard on their health. Have you heard of Back Yard Chickens? It's a website/forum that is amazing! Lots of super helpful folks...and at almost anytime of day. I'm sure you would have received several responses to ?'s about Bo. You really should check it out. www.backyardchickens.com I got a T-shirt from there that says "My Pet Makes Me Breakfast". It's ran/owned by the guy who wrote the book Chickens For Dummies.

Again, sorry to hear about Bo. Keep us posted as to what you find out :)

{{{hugs}}}

Thanks for the link. I will definitely check it out. I did purchase a book by Gail Damero "The Chicken handbook". A tad outdated but it's really the only source I could find without getting into medical Vet books. I haven't read it all but it is informative.

Not sure what Bo had. When DH phoned me at the shoppe to tell me she wasn't doing well, I drove to the nearest Tractor Supply store to see what I could learn as our Local Fee Store was closed. They couldn't help me. I did go to our LFS on Monday to pick up a couple of chicks and spoke to one of the guys and right away, he said "with the crazy warm weather we had, I would bet it was respiratory". And in hindsight, yea I can see it. So, I bought some antibiotic and put it in my Chicken kit. They had the same stuff at Tractor Supply, wish someone would have made that suggestion. I would have tried anything at this point. You bet I'm keeping an eye on my 5 other girls!

Not sure what breed Bo was. She was part of a batch we purchased at our LFS, 5 were white and 2 black hens. It was my first attempt at raising chickens and I didn't know much so I took whatever with the understanding that I would research the breeds later on. This time I purchase 4 Rhode Island Reds. I live way up north and they are suitable for our climate.

I do love chickens. I find them so entertaining. I can sit and watch the chicks (they are presently in the house for now) endlessly! lol

Thanks Beverly for the link.
