Would anyone else be interested in working on Merit Badges? I was thinking that perhaps we could pull our talents together and help each other out.
I was thinking of working on the Quilting badge and would be willing to help anyone who would want to work on it. I can design a small doll quilt that would be a beginner project. I would be willing to post tips on how to piece a quilt and would also be available for questions.
Is that something that be of interest to anyone?

Carole! I would love that! I want to learn simple projects of quilting. Haven't too much time these days at all. But would love to try what I can!
Also, on this topic, Brenda and I have gdaughter's in the tween ages that would love to do swaps, earn the farmettes badges. Ant of us in the chapter with gkids, kids, or nieces and nephews that might want to join them with simple badges and swaps! Let us know!
Farmgirl hugs, Linda

I'm not sure I understand about your grandD etc... Whatever it is, I do not have a problem with anyone joining in. I am willing to share my knowledge and skills. So, let me know what I would need to do for the Farmettes group and I will attempt to work it in.

Carole I would love to learn to do quilting projects. I just never knew how to get started. Cutting our all those pieces kind of frightened me. But I'm all for learning. Just let us know what our first project and what we need. And of course all your knowledge on how to it. Thank you so much for offering. I've never entered anything for a merit badge. Would love it. Looking forward to starting. Sending farmgirl hugs, Brenda

What I hadn't thought of when I mentioned this little project is the fact that some might not have the tools, such as a rotary cutter, mat and ruler. It certainly makes cutting a whole lot easier! ;o) Do most of you have the basic tools? Can I assume that you all have access to a sewing machine? I am more then willing to offer my assistance, just not sure how to work this out. In my excitement, I neglected to think of the logistics etc... You are all welcome to come over! I don't mind sharing! ;o)

I have all the tools, but for those that don't, Could you till explain how to cut things out. Takes longer, but isn't it the same??? Shows you how much I know.

Thank you Carole. You read my mind, I've been thinking asking how we could go about earning merit badges together. This is great! I would love the help on quilting. My grandma taught me a few things about quilting when I was little. I can do large blocks and have made a couple quilts that way, but the first time I tried making a pieced quilt ended in disaster. I would appreciate all the help I could get! I do have all the tools needed. Can't wait to get started!

Thanks everyone. I will work on posting a supply list so everyone has an idea of what is needed. I will think about how I will be hosting this merit badge project, perhaps find videos as examples. I do know that it will be a small 9 patch doll quilt. Off to get organized!
Cheers!

Hello everyone, here is a list of the basic tools you will need in order to make the small doll quilt.
Sewing machine Sewing machine needles (I recommend Schmetz universal 80 - will write a bit about needles) Thread (Cotton or cotton blend no greater than 50wt - I will write a bit about thread) Rotary cutter, mat & ruler Scissors, seam ripper, Hand needles (will write a bit about them) Straight pins Iron & ironing surface Starch (optional)
These are the basic tools that you will need. If you do not own any and have no clue if you will want to continue quilting, I suggest that you borrow from a friend. Once you decide that this is the hobby for you, we can talk about what is best to begin with. Perhaps toward the end of the class I will talk/write about what I consider to be the best rulers etc....
Next post will be the fabric requirements.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to let me know.
Let the fun begin!

Justine, I'm excited about the quilting project also. I love sewing, but just never knew where to start with quilting. I look at the patterns and think, oh MY all those little pieces! But starting with a small project will be much easier, I hope. I make each of the grandchildren a scrapbook of everything their mothers have save since birth. I have two graduating this May and working on my daughers, son's book. Lots of memories to look over as I go. Anyway, I know Carole is very busy taking care of business right now, but don't lose interest. She will be back with us when she can. Just hang on to you items on the list, and I think her next list, shes going to talk about the fabric. ??? did I read that right?? Have a good day! Hugs,Brenda

Oh no, Brenda, I won't loose interest. I just wanted to let Carole know I had everything together, then when she is ready she could see where I was at. I had a stroke of genius (ha ha) last week. I have some shoe boxes and thought I would put a project I'm working on into each, then label it with a post-it on the outside. I can keep them in my spareroom closet. This quilt project got a box so all is ready and waiting for when Carole is ready. I'm in no hurry, no hurry at all. I completely understand.

Thats a great idea Justine! I'm afried I'd have the closet full of boxes. It seems with 5 grandkids, just as soon as I start something, one of them needs to go through grammies crafts and then need my help to do something for school! But their all worth it. And we'll be having the new one in about 3 weeks.

Forgot something funny. My DH has a tummy that gets in his way when eating. In other words, he has a built in shelf. I told him I was going to make him a bib. Running out of spray-n-wash!!! We were out the other day and he had on a new shirt and I told him not to go staining that one up. He looked at me and said "Well, where is my bib." I'm going to make one and hide it in my purse and the next time he asks me, I'll have it. So there's another project!!!!

Brenda that is so sweet doing those scrapbooks. I started one for each of our boys but I haven't worked on them in a while. I love scrapbooking. I've been knitting some spring placemats for our kitchen and I'm getting things together for a large cross-stitch sampler for our living room. Wish I was better at sewing, I just had a round with some sleep pants for my oldest and the sleep pants won. He is 6 ft. and they are entirely too short for him. Guess I'll be taking them and I'll start his over.

Hello, my name is Carole and I'm a workaholic/perfectionist! ;o) That felt good! lol
Thank you everyone for your patience. You all are an amazing group. I'm so glad I decided to join MJ Farm girls and this hen house. Just thought I would let you know why I am a little strap for time. I own a small business and have recently bought out my partner, as she felt she did not have the time required to be a business owner. So.... I used to have a week off, as we alternated but now that week is gone. When I offered to do this badge, I was still partnered! But.... this is all good news and I'm excited about doing this. I just need a bit of time to get adjusted to working 5 days a week. Nothing unusual for most of you, but for me.... I relied on that off week to get lots of loose ends taken care of. I do have a wonderful 14 year old girl that figure skates and having said that, would you believe I spend on the average 10 hours a week in a skating rink?! I love to watch her. She's not a pro or anything out of the ordinary, just a great kid who enjoys figure skating. Thanks for allowing me to share.
So, I have been thinking on how I want to conduct this badge. I thought that perhaps I should open a blog that will be accessible only to those having the link. There are some things that are easier shown than written about. How would you feel about that? Would you rather I post the info directly on this site? I'd really like your input as you are the ones that will be benefiting from this. I love to teach so please do not be shy!
JThomp.... love your enthusiasm! How I hope I give you all the quilting bug! lol
For those who would like a reference, Quilter’s Academy Vol. 1 – Harriet Hargrave & Carrie Hargrave is a very good book. You do not require the book, I just thought some might like a reference.
I'm off to spend a bit of time with myself. Again, please do not be shy about let me know how you want me to post the information.
In friendship,
