Baker Manufacturing

In 1875, the Baker Manufacturing Company began producing iron pumps and wooden windmills under the Monitor name. Recognition came quickly. Monitor was awarded its first gold medal as a source of ingenuity and design at the Columbian Exposition of 1893. But this was only the beginning. Baker’s deep-well hand pumps are for use with windmills, pump jacks, or as a stand-alone hand pump. They have a built-in surge chamber, an adjustable stroke and a multi-position cap. The wheel handle valve in the bib spout allows you to shut o ff flow to the spout, which allows water to be diverted through an outlet plug on the back of the hand pump over to another point, such as a storage cistern. A few strokes of the handle fills the reservoir with water, which without further pumping, becomes a smooth-flowing drinking fountain.

I have read in your recent issues of “MaryJanesFarm” that you have a hand pump for your 400-foot deep well. May I inquire as to the company from which you purchased it? We just had our well dug, and I would like to research the option of having a hand pump in the event of a power outage (sometimes it can go out for several days!).

I bought my hand pump from Baker Manufacturing Company, 133 Enterprise Street, Evansville, Wisconsin 53536, 608-882-2730, www.bakermfg.com. I called them last week to make sure it was okay for me to send my readers to them. They were thrilled. I spoke with a dear man named John Falconer. He was very patient and helpful. You could write to him at jfalconer@baker-mfg.com. But a hand pump isn’t something that you can install yourself. You’ll need to work with a water well driller or a water systems company. I’m sure you can find a reputable one in Spokane. The local company who did my installation is TPM Water Systems, 208-883-0660. If you can’t find someone to help you, maybe TPM can recommend someone.
