Our calving started 2 weeks early this year. Momma had one baby, standing up. I caught baby and gave it a bit of a softer landing. All was good, went in to wash up my milker and grab a bit of supper. Told my husband, the calf seemed kind of small, but it was the first one, maybe I was wrong. Sure enough got back out there right away and there was number two. A girl and a boy. They are a week old now and doing well.

Oh! CONGRATULATIONS, Michele! So happy for all of you!

This is one of my favorite times of year for just that reason! We love driving through the surrounding farmlands, seeing all the babies! Yesterday we saw a whole bunch of colts and foals.. So tiny, yet so majestic! And the calfs are already making a show in one local field! To me, this is just as wondrous as when the tulips and hyacinths start poking up through the ground! What a joyful - and busy - time this must be for you! So excited for you!
I pray for everyone's health, strength and happiness!

Hugs,

Nini

How about some pictures of the twins? Hope the calving season goes smoothly for all.

Love their sweet little faces! Enjoy watching them kick up their heels in the pastures this spring.

Thanks all, I need to tag them next. I just hate doing that anymore. I tell them I have my ears pierced, I know how it feels. They are fun to watch play. When they play you know they are getting enough to eat and feeling good.

So far. we have had one bull calf. I need to get out there to take pictures of him. He is early because the neighbor's bull pulverized one of our fences. The rest of the babies should start around April 1st. Lambies will start showing up around April 1st. I love love love this time of year!

Aww I love the little babies!! It makes me excited to be getting ours! My husband’s family farm is starting to see calves being born as well. We will be taking and bottle feeding the ones who lose a mom or are rejected by the mom. Congratulations on the new babies!

I love the pictures Michele! I love the way Herefords get curly hair. How many do you have? We have dairy cows and our first one is 2 days overdue! Since she looks like it'll be a few days yet before she calves I'm betting it's going to be a bull calf.

Hope all goes well Heather. Add another bull calf last night. We don't have too many cows anymore, sorry I hate to say a number to jinx anything. lol Rain supposed to be moving in today. Break up the snow, but then mud season really gets going.

Forgive me Michele - I don't want to jinx anything! Sometimes my curiosity gets the best of me and I get too nosy. I just love to hear people's stories especially about farming. There are so many ways to farm and it fascinates me the things people do - from milking 1 cow by hand for your family to milking thousands of cows or the robot dairies that don't have to milk anymore - it's all amazing. I don't know a lot about the beef side of things but I'm guessing it's just as diverse since I've seen cattle ranches, HUGE feedlots, and show cattle barns that are air conditioned!!!

Our first cow due took too long to be the first to calve. The second one due had her baby last night. A cute little red and white heifer:

lol heather no worries. I just try not to count my chickens before they hatch. You got a cutie pie there. Congratulations on a girl. I have one Holstein milk cow, and 20 head of beef, including steers, cows, and my new bull. Evelyn my milk cow is due in Sept, she has not been back in heat, so she should of stuck. I will dry her up early, to give me the summer off from milking.

That is enough to keep you busy!! I love the name Evelyn for your milk cow. With all the names we've came up with over the years we've never used Evelyn. We have 30 milking cows plus young stock. We keep all the heifers but not the bull calves. The cow I thought for sure was going to have a bull didn't!! She had a cute little heifer. Now we have a month before the next one is due.

I just thought I'd share a few photos of my curious neighbours who were watching me through the fence as I hung the washing out on the line this morning.

Beautiful scenery for those cows (and you) to enjoy. What kind of breed are they?

Yes, I am very blessed to have such beautiful surroundings. I believe the calves are a hereford/charolais cross breed. They are very mischievous little guys!!
