I was out saving seed from my Mexican sunflowers yesterday and I absolutely love them. They are so beautiful in the fall. And very easy to grow---often self seeding in the garden. Does anyone else grow this beautiful flower? My garden is also full of morning glories a friend gave me to plant one year and I was dumb enough to do it. They are beautiful, but truly a pest. Every year I pull so many up and still come fall the garden is full of them.

Barbara I haven't grown the Mexican variety but I have grown the giant Russian sunflowers. In the mornings the heads were facing east and would follow the sun across the sky so by evening they were facing west. By morning they were facing east again. I would like to grow them again but too much shade.

I love the way the sunflowers follow the sun during the day. I also have a yard that is too shady for sunflowers and other sunloving plants anymore; over the last 35 years trees have grown over the yard. Sometimes I miss not being able to grow them but I sure do appreciate the shade in summer.

I love to try all kinds of sunflowers---Sara---where did you find seed for the Russian giant ones? They sound interesting.

Barbara it was years ago so I don't remember which seed catalog I ordered them from. Then I lived on 3/4 of an acre with plenty of sun. I do miss growing sunflowers.

I have a full shade yard, but the Mexican Sunflowers are a big favorite at the Chicago Botanical Garden. I love their vibrant colors and if we ever move to a home with a sunny yard I will definitely plant them. Enjoy growing yours and please post pictures when they bloom

I have never heard of the Mexican Sunflower. I do love sunflowers, though. There is something so happy about them. I will have to see if I can find some seeds around here and plant some.

Grace -- I can grow morning glories with no problem but have tried several times to grow moonflowers with no luck, no matter what I do. I've tried soaking the seeds, nicking them a little, and just plating them but they refuse to grow for me. Maybe it's a west coast thing?

Judith,,, Mine would grow, but were a tad spindly.. but oh my! at dusk when the sun went down the scent was lovely,, like baby powder.
I soaked mine over night and then planted them.. but out of a package of 10-12 seeds, usually only 2-3 would sprout..
I guess they are a bit fussy,,, unlike morning glories and sun flowers that sprout at a sneeze...

Hey Barbara!
Mexican sunflowers grow wild here along our roads! Right kind of weather and conditions! As for your question, YES! I do have them in my garden along with all kinds of other beautuful flowers! I'm a flower garden nut! I've been harvesting seeds like crazy! (Zinnia, dahlias, cardinal vine, lantana, blue plumbago(?), moon flowers, violet bells of some sort, cosmos of all kinds, mexican sunflowers, milkweed, marigolds, sage, and about 3 others I can't name. Would you like some seeds???

We have Jerusalem Artichokes growing alongside our roads; they look like sunflowers. They have edible tubers but I haven't tried them yet. I think they are called Sunchokes in the store.

Diana---I would love some seeds---how nice of you. Whatever you think is easy to grow is best for me. I bet your flowers are beautiful. I have to plant mine in the vegetable garden or in pots on the patio because of deer. I can't imagine them growing wild by the road---that would be awesome. Grace---the Mexican sunflower is not a true sunflower. It is covered with little orange blooms all season long and gets to be six feet tall. I discovered them by accident' A lady I helped got some plants reduced at Lowes and we planted them along her driveway and forgot we had---they grew up and bloomed and we were amazed. '

Those are gorgeous! Around the corner is a little farm stand where the man sells sunflowers, but he doesn't have any as pretty as these!

Keep shining!
