Yesterday evening I saw two fireflies in my backyard, first ones this year. I miss the days of open fields, tall grass, and hundreds of fireflies. Here in town, I see a few now and then but each time I do it takes me right back to being a kid again and the wee blinking lights in the tall grass.

There's not much I like about the summer, but I do like seeing fireflies, sitting outside in the early mornings before it heats up, eating ice cold watermelon, and drinking red beer. For you who have never had the opportunity to experience red beer it's beer, tomato juice, and a dash of hot sauce. I happen to prefer Tabasco sauce.

I know there are you out there who thrive in the summertime, I'm just not one of them. So what do you like about the summer?

Hi Sara, I've seen fire flies once in my life, I was a child, we were visiting family back in Michigan, Traverse City area, I was mesmerized, they seemed so magical to me. I've not seen any since. What a treat it would be! I do love everything about summer, the longer days, the warmth, the birds, bees, bugs, the wildlife, crickets, flowers, water fights, dipping my toes in the lake or our favorite creek up a Paulina Peak, picnics on an old quilt, reading a book in a hammock and listening the leaves flutter. Awe, some years I wish summer could last forever!

I wish that I could post a video for y'all on MJF. Last week the dogs got me up to go potty at 2:30 am and I enjoyed the fireflies in our front yard. They mostly are downhill in the tall weeds and I've noticed that there are more after rain. My sweetie insists on keeping the porch light on at night so a few bugs slip in when we open the door for the last dog potty break before bed. I manage to catch and release them.
I like summer because I can sit outside in peace & quiet, reading books or writing letters. I love the smell of cut grass that takes me back to my grandparents' North Dakota farm. I love putting in a garden and seeing the plants grow.
Mostly, I love summer because my birthday is July 6th.

I have not seen fireflies either since I was a kid. We had so much fun chasing them.
My favorite summer things are the beach, watermelon, homegrown tomatoes, 4th of July and all it represents as well as July 9th my Birthday. So July is a very special month for my family and we have so much fun!

Sara, I have never seen a firefly before. That is something I have always dreamed about though. I hope to get the opportunity one day. My favorite thing about summer is getting away on trips and camping. I enjoy the break from reality. I also like having my garden and all the yummy fresh food that comes with summer. I love the feel of the summer night temps but I hate being outside because of mosquitoes so I don't enjoy that very much. I also really love summer because I can send the kids outside and get some quiet time lol!

Oh Sara!!! You reminded me of my dad!! He drank red beer! I always thought it was so nasty! Smelled terrible! Lol!! As far aS the fireflies? I've been so blessed to live in many places where there have been brilliant light shows dur to so many fireflies!! Its magi for me! I love them! We do have them here. More so 6 years ago than mow. Like Vanessa said, more are seen after the rains especially against the outskirts of the woods and around the tall grasses. They make me smile big! Favorite summer things are swimming in the pool, eating watermelon, watching the bees and butterflies in the flower garden and sitting on the porch in the evening watching the bats come out!! :)

I so loved hearing all of you talk about what you like about summer. Y'all make it sound like so much fun. Here in Texas my outside fun is limited to very early mornings and way after dark. Vanessa, enjoy your fireflies as open land is dwindling, we are losing them.

I haven't seen any fireflies yet. I'm sure I will, did last summer. And as kiddo loved seeing them and chasing them. Here in Texas it gets hot very quickly Sara. But you knew that. Love sitting outback in the morning drinking my hot tea watching the birds and hearing there singing. To me I want to think they are telling me good morning. I tell them good morning too. Love seeing the butterflies and hummingbirds get nectar from my flowers and my veggie also love the month of August birthday time for me and my son. I'm the 5th and my son is the 19th.

I’m like Krista…I’ve never seen a firefly. It’s on my bucket list for sure.

I love the how life seems to slow down a bit in the summer. Lazy days at my sister-in-law’s pool, bbq dinners, and lots of time outside (mostly in the morning and evenings). I love not having to make hot dinners too…

Sara, I can understand why summer isn't your favorite season. Here in the north, it's something we look forward to after the long gloomy winter. Everything is dead in winter, the only green we see is pine trees. I like summer camping, campfires, picnics, fresh produce/farmers markets, oh the list goes on!
I think spring is my favorite, when things start growing again and everything slowly turns green.
I love fireflies too. I saw some near our house in April. I was so excited! It seems the population dropped and maybe it's coming back. When I was a kid we would catch them and put them in a jar with a stick and some leaves. In the morning we would let them go. We were only allowed one each.

Yesterday as I was filling up Annie's water bowl on the back deck I saw a yellow butterfly laying belly up on the deck. It was beautiful all yellow except for red on each wing next to its body. Its legs were kicking so I knew it was still alive, I pinched off several chocolate mint leaves and laid them on it. It grabbed hold of the leaves, and I carried it to the container of bay and put it right side up under the bay tree. After a couple of hours, I checked on it and it was gone. Gotta save every one of them that we can.

Butterflies are another thing I like about the summer.

Gosh, it has been long time since I have fire flies in my yard! But oh how all of us kids loved to catch them in a jar and look at them before releasing them back out into the night. We do have them around here in the rural areas but there are not as many as I remember in Virginia growing up.

Sara, I resonate with your feeling about Summer because going East from where you are , you hit Florida. We DO SUMMER down here from May-October and into early half of November! The heat from the warming up Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico keep moisture blowing across the state at all times . We also have had very early Spring warm-ups that start in early February now and continue right into more summer like weather by late April into May. It becomes quite oppressive down here for most of the summer months due to high humidity, high temps, and high heat index. Believe it or not, Summer months for us are more like winter months up north when you think about how much time you stay indoors.

You will be hearing me whining come late July and August about the weather! The general pattern down here has shifted to what is called the El Nino . That generally means less powerful hurruicanes due to wind shearing in the lower Gulf and Caribbean. So, we shall see what happens. Last year's two devastating hurricanes that hit us were so huge that they are still trying to clean up and rebuild back infrastructure and homes. We could do with a calmer season this year to catch our breaths!

I love fireflies. Used to catch them when we were kids. Always see them more out in the country.
When we were on the east coast and would go to Lancaster there was this one big field we liked to drive by in the evenings because it would just be loaded with fireflies. The whole field would be lit up yellow with them. I haven't noticed if we have them here. Could be the pesticides they use on the fields have lowered the firefly population. Don't know for sure but there sure seem to be a lot less of them these days.
Yesterday we spent some time with the grandchildren. Had a picnic and a water ballon fight. So fun but they have pretty good aim and I got quite wet. Then we had watermelon, my favorite!
I love camping and campfires, swimming, hiking and sleeping with the windows open.

It sounds like you all are having a wonderful summer so far!
I never have seen a firefly but would enjoy if I did. I do like Summer always have, just have trouble with the heat. My favorite time of the year! Here it doesn’t get too hot and mostly clear unless it is hot inland then we get fog til it cools in the evening and then the sun comes out.
Have a wonderful day!

Homemade ice pops(use lemonade, sweet tea, or fruit juice) in molds. Getting up early to go for a walk on property to see and hear wildlife.
I missed seeing the fireflies when we lived in SE SC. I like to sit on front porch at night and listen to frogs and see the bunnies.
Seeing the hummingbirds!!! Enjoying the 1rst tomato sandwich of the season!!!
Summer should last 6 months or longer. The best time of the year I think

FLIP FLOPS!!! I love when it's finally warm enough for my toes to breath LOL! I really love all the seasons but some things I love about summer (besides flip flops LOL!) are the long hours of sunshine, the smell of fresh cut hay, food fresh from the garden, and the breeze coming through the open windows. And iced tea, ice cream, and frozen cocoas!

It blows my mind that some of you have never seen lightning bugs! I assumed they were everywhere.

Fireflys are out in Wisconsin. It does make me smile too. Thinking back to being kids and catching them. I agree with Heather, the best smell of summer is new mown hay. The best feeling is getting that cut hay up with out any surprise rain falls.
