I've been wanting to post all our different boll weevil statues that are popping up all over town, each with their own unique personalities! I giggle at them and shake my head BUT Now we're going to be aired on CBS!
The City of Enterprise is expected to be in the national spotlight Sunday when a news story on the City and the boll weevil will air on CBS Sunday Morning
The feature will explain how Enterprise farmers overcame the destructiveness of the boll weevil, forcing them to switch from cotton to peanuts, more than 100 years ago. “CBS Sunday News” reporter Conor Knighton focuses on how today Enterprise honors the boll weevil through a monument, statues and merchandise.
“We are thrilled to be able to showcase the City of Enterprise on a national stage,” Tourism and Community Relations Director Tammy Doerer said. “From the Boll Weevil Monument in the heart of our City, to the 28 Weevils around town, we really embrace the pest that could not destroy the spirit of the people of Enterprise. You’ll see that as part of this ‘CBS Sunday Morning’ piece.”
The CBS production crew spent about two and a half days in the City of Progress back in May exploring the City and interviewing several local business owners. Doerer said the feature will air Sunday, pending any breaking news.
The Emmy Award-winning “CBS Sunday Morning” airs at 8 a.m. Sunday on WTVY News 4, the local CBS affiliate.

Good morning Sheila! Glad you asked! There are all kinds of weevils and the ones I hate most are the ones that get in my flours and grits and other flour based products but I found out using a bay leaf or 2 in the same bag prevents them from infesting. The boll weevil that our Wiregrass area was having problems with was a cotton weevil. "The boll weevil is a beetle that feeds on cotton buds and flowers. Thought to be native to Central Mexico, it migrated into the United States from Mexico in the late 19th century and had infested all U.S. cotton-growing areas by the 1920s, devastating the industry and the people working in the American South."
They began planting peanuts here abd it was incredibly successful! Brought the economy back up and jobs for many people! There are still cotton fields all over as they rotate crops here. We have a peanut festival every fall after the harvest of the peanuts with art contests and peanut recipe contests and rides and boiled peanuts, livestock, etc. Real cowboy/farmer kind of things! Fun too! The only drawback to the peanuts is the allergy part! It can be killer when they harvest them. Peanut dust puts Sara and I in a heavy allergy fit!!;)

Dianna, I know you are proud of your town. I grew up hearing about the dreaded cotton boll weevil. At that time cotton was still king in Texas along with oil. If my memory serves me correctly Tex Ritter sung about the boll weevil just looking for a home.

Dianna, that is so neat. We have had weevils before that got into my flour. Thanks for sharing about the bay leaves. I’ll have to look up the news story.
