A while back, July 10th to be exact... I lamented about wishing there were old fashioned bakeries that made bread and pastries..
Gone are those days of local bakeries... Well last week I found a sweet book at the 2nd hand book store... And found this..
It had some lovely quilt ideas and recipes.. I spotted this one for an Herb de Provence...
So... I just had to make it... But I added 2 TBLSP of ground flax seed and a tsp of sugar. The recipe calls for Thyme or pre- mixed Herb de Provence.
Needless to say, the house smells heavenly and the bread turned out fabulous!
Nothing tastes like home,, except fresh baked bread..

Looks good; I can almost smell it from here. I always add a bit of sugar to feed the yeast. I also add ground flax to my breads.

I think that is the book I saw in a shop in Solvang when my daughter and I were there before the plague. Good job finding it second hand.

Oh yum! Was there a recipe for making the Herb de Provence blend itself? I've only been able to find it from King Arthur Flour and it's pricey for just a small jar. It is my "go to" herb blend. jean

So true! Baked bread is the true smell of home---but I use the bread maker---plus I am trying to learn Mary Janes wild bread method from her book---so far I have failed---LOL! Will let you Know if I ever succeed. The coons and possums do eat it though---I don't use it to shingle houses like the pancakes on Green Acres. But it is BAD!

Barbara,,, hahah! I thought I was the only one who still watches old G.A. re-runs! lol!
Judith, great minds think like (sugar & ground flax)..
I purchased the book for $1.49... the retail price when it was new in 2002 was $25.95 and it's paperback!

Jean, traditional Herb d Provence is a blend of the following dried herbs: Thyme Sage, Basil, Rosemary, Marjoram, Oregano and Savory.. I assume one would use equal parts of each...
I used a mix I get from Germany in my yearly 'care packages' from family,, it's called: Gute Laune It is a natural sourced collection of herbs and flower petals.
Contains: Sea salt, Garlic, Oregano, Basil, Rosemary, Thyme, Rose petals, Echanesia petals.
I use it to blend in with cream cheese as a spread... and you can mix it slightly in basic Balsamic vinegar, let set over a few days,, to give the balsamic a hint of herb essence.
The bummer is, I am down to my last 25g and my Aunt, can't find it anymore (at the shop she use to buy it from).. I may have to go on-line and fingers crossed, the company is still around, so I can order it. We'll see.... fingers crossed.

If you find a source stateside, please let me know, Grace. I use the King Arthur Flour one and it is quite good. I especially like to add a nice hefty pinch to scrambled eggs, yum. This time of year I pull out all my squash recipes and almost always add some to them. But your bread is gorgeous and I know your house smelled delicious while it was baking. You've inspired me, I just may fire up my bread machine this afternoon . . .

Grace your bread looks delicious! I use Herbs de Provence all the time with chicken dishes or rice dishes and find it is delicious. My blend also has lavender in it which is grown everywhere in Provence , France. I think some of the blend svary according to specific areas where they are used and popular.

Herbs de Provence can be bought from Penzys Spices. They have excellent spices and spice blends.
