Earlier this year we did a couple of fun Feedsack Swaps. I wish we could do another one, but alas, I have no more feedsacks to share. But I did want to share this very good article that I came across today -- "Sewing During the Great Depression". I thought y'all might enjoy it as much as I did. I'm not sure if the link will work. If not, then cut and paste the address into your browser. It's worth taking a few minutes to read about this part of our history.

Super article, Jean. I love all the older patterns and fabrics and still use them in crafts today. Thank you for sharing.

Jean, your feed sacks swaps were so much fun. I just wanted you to know that they were really fun for me. I never knew, even though, as a young child I wore some and slept between the sheets at grandma's house, that they came in such bright pretty prints.

Thank you Jean for sharing this article! I learn something new all the time! I too loved these patterns and downloaded one. The feedback swaps were terrific. I adore the beautiful patterns and colors! It seems like our music, our tastes and materials were all so fresh, colorful and unique! I don't see much of that now.

Hello, Farmgirl Sisters,
I have been going through tons of things trying to pack for my move to Richmond. I came across this picture of my mother's sisters' Mary and Dee. They are wearing feedsack dresses that my Grandma Mellie (their mother) made for them. This picture was taken around 1948 or 1949 (the year I was born). I just thought you might enjoy seeing the dresses. Sadly, Aunt Dee is the only one left now.

Happy New Year to everyone!

Darling photo! I just love the good ole' times where we made do and things were hand made... heart warming. Not that life was easier by any means, but definately more "quality" in every aspect of life than the current day in which we live. I remain grateful to MJF for keeping us all together and sharing the good things together! And, I remain grateful to my mama for teaching me that hand made, heart felt and hard work provides the true gifts in life!

April, I agree with you whole heartedly! Today's fast pace causes us to scramble to keep up and thus lose a lot of just "being in the moment" and enjoying what is actually happening around us.

Joan, the photos of your Mom's sisters in their feedback dresses is priceless! My Mom, born 1914, grew up dressing and using feedback for everyday needs. When she was 15, her family moved to a farm and the Great Depression hit. Feedsack was all that was affordable during her remaining teen years. There are a few of her pieced quilt squares that I have but were never made into a quilt . They are full of lots of feedback scraps and I love to look at them and wonder what the feed stores must have looked like with various feeds sporting a new or different print. This day and age, we got shopping for fabric in stores that many, many different types of fabrics and prints and plain cloth to choose from. Amazing!!

Well, well, well . . . clearly farmgirl interest in feedsacks is alive and well. And, it pleases me no end to report one of our farmgirls has recently come into a feedsack stash and has most graciously offered them for another feedsack swap. What do y'all think? Are you ready to re-visit your roots with me? When I have a handle on quantities and sizes, I will put on my thinking cap and see if I can come up with something fun for us all. In the meantime, keep your stories coming and send me your thoughts for a new swap.

jean

Joan those little dresses are so cute!!!
When my aunt Tillie moved back to Texas, from Maine, with her growing family, my grandma's friends and neighbors soon pitched in. Many ladies donated their out grown floral print dresses and skirts. My aunt ordered some pretty ric rac and bias tape. Then she decorated her home and made her little daughters summer wardrobe! Seems like she had three or four at the time...but her family grew and grew as she had babies. 12 total! Her husband built their living room furniture...adorondike chairs and a setee, with small tables and a coffee table as well and painted them white!. Then Tillie made floral cushions with ruffels. . . it was adorable... And I have always wished for that look...instead of heavy upholstered sofas and chairs. Anyway when I saw her little girls dresses I was in awe, although only 14...I made mental notes for the future. . .which has never come...I could not dress my son that way...then I could not put ruffles and lace on my grand daughters...because of their mother. So I continue to keep my memories and sometimes I get to remember and share!

Well Jean, I'm up for another feed sack swap. I think I used up every snippet of the feed sack fabric I received for the first two swaps.
Hopefully the internet will be working well, and I will not miss out!

Happy New Years ladies! Its been quite busy here at the Hauf homestead as our temps have been near the 80s( except last couple days)!
Joan, your picture of your aubts are so precious and beautiful! I love the dresses!! All the best on your move! I'd help if I were near!!! :)
April, I so so agree with you and am very thankful for all that my mom taught me too! I'm trying to pass on the things she has taught me as well as the amazing things I've learned from all the ladies here at aryJabes and MaryJanes magazines. Some of it Sara wants to learn but most is in competition with her phone. Sad to say. But boy oh boy, when her friends come over I sure do get excited to share with them the amazing things they could learn! Lol, Sara is like "oh mom"! Mamma D wants to start a club for the local girls around who DO want to learn!! Wish me luck and prayers as that is my quest for this new year 2022. These teen girls need a safe place and some good old fashioned skills that they can take with them into the next generation before everything gets erased!

Hahaha, Denise . . . it requires nothing as there is no feedsack swap at this point. There has just been renewed chit chat on the subject. However, Farmgirl LauraBell, has recently acquired some feedsacks and is graciously donating them for another swap as the first two were so popular last year. I should receive them on Monday. When I see what is available I will determine just how to proceed and will post a new feedsack swap with guidelines. Be patient, m'dear. Hopefully I will get this all put together for us all next week.
In the meantime, do read the article posted above and if you have time wander back to the pages for the first two feedsack swaps to familiarize yourself with the resources, guidelines and wonderful farmgirl stories that were shared.

Farmgirl hugs,
jean

Winnie and Marilyn,
With my mother, grandmothers, and aunts all gone, except for Aunt Dee, I really miss all the time we spent doing things together and learning so much from each other. All of us sewed and quilted. My grandmothers, mother and Aunt Dee also crocheted. Having both of you share your memories with all of us means so much to me. I feel like I am with family, and I thank you both for that.

Dianna, I wish we were closer so I could help you with your club. It sounds exciting! I will email in the next couple of days.

Hugs to all my Farmgirl Sisters!
