Go figure we finally got some lovely weather,, and I felt like spending the entire days outside in the garden... got my plants planted,, seeds sowed and the Bees were busy in the Apple and Cherry trees... when BAM!! yesterday we plunged back into the 50's, windy cold weather and into the mid30's last night... At 7pm I dashed out to the garden and covered everything... got up this morning,, my plants were saved.. but it never got up past the mid 50's so on the advice of a Master Gardner here,, I left everything covered and will continue to do so until Friday... when our night time weather will stay in the mid to low 40's. I hope!

I think Mother Nature is going through the change! It has been crazy like that here, too, Gracie. We actually planted a couple of beds with cold weather crops back at the end of March and have made little hoop houses out of white fabric garden cover and rabbit fencing and/or chicken wire for them. I am always amazed how much heat that lightweight fabric helps create and contain. The plants love it and the diffused light it casts. Last year was the first year I did this and the results were phenomenal. I am amazed and thrilled.

Last year I kept them on for a long time for several reasons. Like I said, the plants just love it; but it also helped deter animals and bad bugs, and protected the plants when the fireworks were going off throughout the neighborhood. (Ashes from the fireworks kill everything!)

So I'm not sure what you're using for cover, but if its that white lightweight fabric sheeting like we use, you might find leaving it over the plants instead of just covering them in the cold will have additional happy benefits - and you won't be running out last minute to protect them when things are wonky!

Hugs -

We've had the coolest weather here for spring in YEARS! Its wacky for sure! Usually in mid February we've already reached in the 80's with a lot of humidity but that didn't happen. We've been nice here for sure. However, on that note, we are expected to hit 100 by this coming Wednesday!! Wha-what? You know the old saying Grace, all good things come to those who wait? Or better yet, patience is a virtue. Hang in there. Screwy weather patterns, people going bonkers, weird times indeed. ..

Grace, I’m so sorry. I had to do that last week. Hopefully you can get some warmer weather soon. I hope your garden grows great this year and survives your cold.
