HI Farmgirls,
Well, to be honest the pandemic has not changed my New Years Eve much. We used to throw a party, but I got tired of people not knowing when to leave. Then we used to go to a New Years Party, but I did not like the drive home. For the last several years, it has been dd and me, as my dh always has to work, Hopefully they let him come home early. We usually order chinese food, but I just can’t take the sodium and msg SO - this year I am making my own. I am making homemade won ton soup, dumpings, have some spring rolls from Costco, and am making Chicken Fried Rice in the Instapot.
We are going to watch movies. Are you? What are some good New Year’s movies? I will start: MY two favorites are “When Harry Met Sally” and “Someone Like You” (an old Ashley Judd/ Hugh Jackman). What movies

It'll be a quiet night here on the farm too. We're in the middle of quite a snow storm and have had some power issues. If we DO have power tonight, we probably watch what we always watch on New Years Eve -- "Ocean's 11". The Original movie with Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack was about a casino heist that was pulled off on New Year's eve. The new one with George Clooney and a whole new gang actually doesn't take place on New Year's Eve. So we just pretend it does and watch it anyway. LOL. Just can't get enough of George Clooney and Andy Garcia -- eye candy for us more mature Farmgirls. HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone. Well, we know for sure it's gonna be happier than 2020.

Ohhh, snow.....wish I had some Jean! Happy New Year to you both Jean and Nicole! A quiet, VERY quiet night here on the homestead with hubs in Afghanistan, Sara with her grandfather. Just me and boo and Cassie kitty! We are cutting out patterns, eating pizza and watching Black Panther! ( I LOVE Marvel comics) ;)

Hmmmmm. Quiet night in Kent, Wa. Our New Year's tradition will be Japanese style. I let my husband's traditions take over for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day (for the most part) since most other holidays are handled American style. So dinner will be nabe (nah-beh). That's like a stew cooked at the table. Thinly sliced pork goes into a broth along with noodles and veggies and you just scoop out whatever suits your fancy. It's a winter dish. He will cook another dish for breakfast for us, sort of a local soup, zoni (zoh-nee). That one is broth, chunks of daikon radish, and soft rice cakes. I might jazz it up a bit by adding a few more veggies to my personal bowl since I don't add the fish flakes that add protein. I'll probably watch a Star Trek movie tonight. Just have to choose one.
I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station through which God speaks to us every hour if we will only tune in.

Nichelle, I love that....I've been "tuning in all afternoon here! Surprised by how many different birds I am hearing for January!! Of course we are in the upper 60's low 70's right now. I will make a small southern dish of collards and black eyed pea salad. No meat. It's just moist! Enjoy all the delectable dishes you all have mentioned!!

Dianna, my roots are right in SC (by way of NY), so I'm making my peas and rice and greens, too. My family is pretty multicultural. Normally, I'd say no meat for me, but I never met a piece of fried salt pork (fatback) I didn't like. It was always a snack when I was growing up with my grandparents.

Nachos and Monopoly tonight but tomorrow we feast on our traditional New Years day Pork roast on sauerkraut, black eyes, and collard greens and DH will probably want to watch a football game if any are being played. I'm not a football fan so I will just put on my noise cancelling headphones, listen to music, and maybe sew. One of the bad things about this year is that every day is the same. We're living in the movie Groundhog Day. The only difference about the holidays is fixing traditional food. And eating it by ourselves.

Haha! Yes, Nichelle, my mom would have said the same thing!! She'd put fat back in all the beans, cabbage and other good ol southern food! She was born and raised NC! I was never much on pork or beef ( except a good steak) so it was easy for me to give up meat back in 84! But my hubs is definitely a pork eating guy! Bacon is his candy!

Our new years eve movie marathon was the Lord of the Rings trilogy! I have three kings in my house, so Mama was out voted this year. That's okay, I am now totally addicted to ancestry.com - my husband made the comment that he thought he got me the wrong gift this year as I've been nose to tablet since Christmas day... new years movies? what new year? In all honestly, I'm completely ready for a new year, a fresh start, joy, peace, health, contentment. I pray these beautiful gifts surround us all this coming year. Happy New Year to all!

Oh, and our usual new years menu consists of holiday meatballs in the crock, 7 layer bean dip, chips, charcuterie tray with meats, cheeses, crackers, fruits, candies, cookies, etc... nothing extravagant, but fun and easy and allows us to graze for hours! Oh, and champagne and sparkling apple cider and fortune cookies!

Happy New Year! I have not made a lot of Asian food before, but it turned out great! I was especially proud of my “wonton soup” as I did not have a recipe, just “winged” it. It was delicous! DH and DD told me how much they enjoyed it. New Years Day it was a big pot of black eyed peas (not taking any chances, lol) and cornbread. We didn’t watch but one movie- we were all too tired. We did watch the ball drop at midnight, but it seemed so uneventful, and really a bit depressing.
Anyway, some great movies everyone mentioned!

We watched the ball drop while playing monopoly. I noticed that by 20 minutes past midnight the invited spectators were gone and they were already cleaning up. I think it was a lot of fuss and expense for no great purpose. We really enjoyed the fireworks from Sydney Australia the best.
Still eating blackeyes and even have one piece of cornbread left. We're not taking any chances either.
