Hello ladies! Thank you to everyone that made my first hosted swap a success! I had a lot of fun and am looking to keep that going. As Independence Day is coming up, I thought maybe it would be fun to throw in a patriotic theme. Certainly not required, but if that strikes your fancy, give it a go!

All that is needed is one cotton dish cloth. Can be crocheted, knitted, simple, fancy...You get the picture! :) Tucks are not required.

Sign up is now until July 14th with partners posted on the 15th and mail out on the 16th.

As a newbie knitter I am hoping I may get some guidance from those of you who are more experienced. I bought knitting needles that have the plastic cords on them. Really nice wooden needles. But as I am knitting the cord keeps unscrewing and if I don't constantly check and screw the cords on the needles, the cord comes off and the stitches are left hanging. Is there a trick to keeping the cords screwed onto the needles? I am really enjoying knitting but this one thing is kind of frustrating. I appreciate any help. Thank you!

Darlene, that would be frustrating! I'm thinking that you are using an interchangeable circular needle? I know that people have problems with them doing just that. I usually use circular needles but they have a permanent cable so you don't have that issue.

Debbie, you are right! I bought a whole set of the interchangeable circular needles...go big or go home....at least it is not operator error!!!I will investigate the ones with permanent cables. Where do you get yours? I ordered a bunch of yarn, so I may make more of these. They are addicting!!! Thank you!

Darlene, I use circular needles ... I like the HiyaHiya ... they have a long screw so it takes a while for it to twist off. There is a tool you can use with them, but I have only had to deal with the unwinding once.

It's my understanding that it is because as you push your stitches up, you are twisting/unwinding it at the same time bit by bit. Change the twist you use to push your stitches or don't twist. I'm right handed so the left side tends to loosen up.

Now that I'm conscious of what I do, I have not had any problems with unwinding.

Hope that helps!

Thank you, Carole! I first bought a set of the straight metal ones, but they were so slippery that the stitches kept coming off. So I bought the ones with the cords. I know it will take me some time to find the type that works best for me. I'll try out your suggestion to change the twist I use to see if that helps. I was looking on Amazon at the fixed cord needles. I was wondering if the metal ones would do what the original metal ones did. Perhaps with more practice these issues will resolve themselves. I so appreciate your help!

I am avidly following this conversation because at some point, I plan on trying to attempt knitting again myself! I've not had much luck in the past.

Hannah, this was such a fun and painless way for me to learn to knit. I went on You Tube and found a couple of different ways to do the dish cloths. There was one that said to cast on 47 stitches all at once and another one that said to cast on 4 stitches and build from there. I liked the second way better. I brought a few embroidery projects to work on while I'm at my daughter's house but I just keep picking up the knitting. Other than the cords unscrewing, it has been such fun!

Well I've tried Wal-Mart and my local quilt shop but no cotton yarn...at least not in red, white and blue. So after looking on line at several places I ordered some from Amazon and hopefully prime will bring it quickly.

We should probably start a new thread for this as to not confuse the swap. I'll start a knitting topic

OMG, it just clicked ... does it have to be knitted or crochet? I understood this to be a "cotton towel" and I purchased one and hand embroidered it with a patriotic design. I do hope this qualifies .... otherwise I will need to pull out!
