| My husband is a city boy. A couple of years ago when God decided that my 80 year old Douglas Fir had lived long enough and sent it to the ground, we had a lot of wood to split. I told him I was going to rent a log splitter. He said that it would cost too much, went to the hardward store, bought a maul and wedges. Then proceeded to try to splint a log by hand. Now any farmgirl will tell you green wood is not so easy to split. So after an hour of toil he had made a small dent in the log. "How much is the log splitter?" $65/day. Sigh -go get it. I came back with said splitter. He said it would take days to split all this wood. I started the splitter, just looked at him. Put the log in and pulled the lever down with my index finger - POW! 2 pieces of wood. He just stood there with his mouth open. Then he said "I guess you do know what you are talking about!" (He is still alive after that remark!). Split all the wood in 3 hours, neatly stacked and drying for next winter. I have never let him forget it! We will be moving to our place off the grid to retire in August. This should get real interesting!!!! |

Great story! It takes them a bit to realize we know what we are talking,about sometimes. Lol. We had some big long logs given to us a long time ago, dh cut them into pieces with the chainsaw and he and our son in law have been getting workouts splitting them into pieces sized for the furnace. Big difference between when you are used to doing it and when you're not. I see you are new to the farm here Susan. Welcome!

Welcome to the farm Susan. Great story! My husband would still be splitting that wood! He never gives in! LoL! Now though he does use a splitter!
Natalie, I see the USED to be! Smart woman! LoL! Mine was a bit snarky this past week! He better behave or he might be a USED to be! Do they have a boot camp for snarky husbands?

Susan, welcome to our Farm here at the MJF Chatroom!, I would say the wood splitting saga was a possible warm up to what is ahead when you retire off the grid!! LOL!, Keep us posted when you move and all the fun you will have creating your own little paradise. It sounds very exciting . Where will this place be located?

Darlene, Lol! After nearly fourteen years, I packed a 14-foot u-haul and drove away smiling from ear to ear. I did remarry and as good as he is in contrast....he is still in training after nearly 8 years!
Coco Chanel said, "As long as you know men are like children, you know everything!" Why didn't I read that a long time ago?! So much energy could have been conserved had I known better. The crazy cat lady persona appeals greatly as scooping a litter box is really not that taxing.

Welcome, Susan! Great story, I loved it! My hubs is a city boy as well... boy do I have stories I could share! I'll just share one: When my oldest son caught his first trout, I was the one who taught my boys to gut a fish, including the hubs! They were ewwwing the whole time! Lol! Every farmgirls gotta have a story or two of her own! Enjoy your new move and I look forward to hearing about your new adventures!

| I lived on a large ranch in Colorado for 5 years. So I am well versed in "making do". We bought the place in northern WA as a second home. It is way back in the woods. I have wonderful neighbors - close but not too close. The lot size for the community is 20 acres minimum. Over the last 2 years I have made friends with my very old diesel generator, learned about electricity, batteries and solar panels. My mornings up there are sitting on the couch, drinking coffee with the dogs, watching the birds. I am so ready to retire and enjoy my "older years" up there. My husband has already learned not to say "I'm bored". I gave him a list of chores that need to be done two pages long!!!!!! Moving is not very painful so far - I take a load of stuff up with every trip. |

| My neighbors are the best. Last week I sudden had all the power in the house go out. None of the breakers were tripped. There was no power to the inverter, monitor panel, nothing. Everything was dead as a doornail. I searched and searched for a reset switch. Could not find anything. So I called my neighbor up the hill - I was thinking that something major and expensive had failed. He found the main breaker to the system the only place I had not looked. The power cord had halfway come out of the plug in the generator, and threw the main breaker. I had already found that and fixed it. So we threw turned the main breaker back on and Hazaah - power! Simple fix. It is a wonderful place - we all help each other when needed. There is a lot of barter, everyone seems to have different talents and strengths. In fact when they know I am there by myself I get a call on the ham radio around 10pm to make sure I am ok. The one time I was outside and did not answer - Judy came down to check on me. I do the same for her when her husband is away. I love the community. |

Ran across this fun page by accident. My failing eyes misread the Aug 1 date on the posting as Apr 1. So here I am. I too have a "City Boy" story. My DH is a Pittsburgh PA born wannabe Farm Boy. Last year our Beautiful Boer doe, Ms. Piggy was struggling to give birth. A hasty call to our goat mentor told DH to don his plastic gloves and reach "in" and pull gently pull out by the legs. He did so successfully and proudly delivered a gorgeous red headed kid. We wiped the little one down and DH said, "Is it a boy or a girl? I don't see any 'equipment'" Fast call to the mentor. Answer: "Lift tail. One hole boy. Two holes girl." He named the baby Norman . . . if you've seen the movie, "City Slickers", you know why.

Susan, welcome to MJF!! I enjoyed your story about your city boy and it sounds like he is sharpening up his rural Homestead skills for your retirement plans. Gotta have that split wood for all those cold months!!
