This sounds so exciting!
My dad's grandparents etc back in Europe were cabinetmakers, and one of my cousins on my dad's side whom I've lost touch with moved to Vermont and became a carpenter and then married a fellow carpenter... and I've always wanted to work with wood. My daughter (age 13) too. She just got a cool little book called The Swiss Army Knife Whittling Book. We got it at a store selling Amish handmade crafts near where we live. We live near Lancaster County PA, and I'm sure that the Amish have wood scraps, but I don't actually know any Amish well enough to ask.
But I am going to scout it out today, and I also found a seller on ebay selling wood scraps, so I might buy that lot just to be safe. It's walnut scraps. I had no idea how expensive nice hardwood scraps would be until I started looking on ebay. Wowsa!!! ;-)

My husband brought home some scraps of ash once and I decided to build a chicken roost or rest from it. Wow. I could not nail 8nto it or drill 8nto it either.major frustration.

Darlene, in PA., it was my intention to finish your block today and mail it tomorrow...but a yellow jacket made me a lefty. My right hand continues to swell...which normally lasts for three days. Not much fun. Very itchy and it hurts. Yes I have iced it and used a benadry! Cream.
I will mail it and let you know when. Just wanted you to know why it will be late. Typing left handed is the pits.

I hear you! The box of exotic hardwoods that I bought on ebay for this project arrived and all were far too hard to do anything with...

Here is my inspiration for the project.
As I mentioned above, sadly the box of hardwood scraps I ordered from ebay were not really workable, especially for a novice. I then tried to follow instructions for carving a rooster from a branch, using a cool whittling book we have, but it turned out to be beyond my skill level at the moment. This led to a total re-thinking of my artistic direction. I found some old boards on my parents' farm and decided to do something a little more two dimensional for now, until I get some more robust woodworking skills and tools under my belt! So found this cool inspiration online. I didn't go for the vivid colors because I just was in the mood for earth tones-- that seemed to go along with the old board I used better than the brights pictured. Not that I wouldn't try them some other time...
Can't wait to see what everyone else created!
