I was researching the local Bee populous here on the West Plains of Spokane, WA.., and came across this helpful info...
" If creating artificial nests for mason bees, such as bee hotels (straws of holes drilled in wood), be aware that these types of bee houses can build up parasites over time. It is important to periodically sanitize or burn nests every three to five years to avoid disease and parasite build-up that might harm wild mason bee populations. "
I think this is also true for and bees that might habitat our 'bug motels that we create ..
That being said,, my 'straws' that have been plugged have still not opened up.. Fingers crossed they will emerge soon.

Good to know.
My Mom gave me one that I hung in my garden. So far no takers. I need to see if it's in the right place. The one I had back in Chicago was packed every year.

Deb,, yep, I read they have to be in sheltered areas from the cold winds.. I placed my in the 90* inside corner safe from the snow and direct winds.. and I have quite a few Cells/straws plugged.. so keeping my fingers crossed that these guys are just sleeping in late...
