We have a few trees on our property that are making me really nervous. 2 are on the side of a hill and would definitely hit the house if they fell. They're also on very rocky soil.
We don't have the money to take all 3 down that are worrying me. My Mom suggested 'topping them off'. I need to research that.
We also can't do it ourselves. I feel better leaving it to a professional. I think we're going to call a guy on Tuesday to look at them and give us his opinion.
Has anyone ever topped off trees? Super tall ones - well over 25'. I get nervous when ever it rains because the erosion is showing more and more roots.

We had our big ash tree topped to get rid of mistletoe. Even when they are careful anything planted under it gets trashed.

I understand that Deb. We have a couple out front that are huge. Would love to have them taken down but can't afford it. May have to look into have them topped off. One especially makes me nervous near the house.

Several years ago my 50' oak was topped during an ice storm. It has since grown new branches on top. Every time we have strong winds I pray over that huge tree and my prayers are answered.

Deb, unless your DH has experience and the proper gear and tools,, I would recommend having a professional Arborist/Tree trimming company do it.. and don't hesitate to ask what they would charge (a discount maybe?) to cut down all 3 trees..
Maybe you can ask the company to cut the tree down and then your DH could cut the branches up into smaller ,removable size... instead of them cutting and chipping.. it might help you to get a reduced price for all 3 trees.. also, if the price includes stump grinding, maybe you can for go that part and have the stumps ground out at a later date...
Just a suggestion...

Sometime you can get them to take them down for the wood. Do you want the wood? If not look for someone that sells it.

We had 2 trees removed last fall. We had them leave them. At the time we didn't have a chain saw, so they cut them into manageable pieces. A neighbor came by a few days later with his splitter and said he was going to take the red oak. He changed his mind. I'm not sure what species these trees are. I need to get my tree book out. We had a sweet gum cut down and no one wants that to burn for heat. We use it in our fire pit outside. I will have hubby ask our guy if he wants the wood. Good idea. Otherwise we will split again and stack. I have more wood than I will ever use in a lifetime of camp fires.
I don't mind the tree stumps. I put a feeder on one of the last ones they took down.

Finally!!! After so many phone calls to have someone come to our home (many never returned calls or didn't show up or both) So frustrating.
We have an arborist coming next week (fingers crossed he shows up - he does come highly recommended). We get 30 minutes for free and are paying for an additional hour. He will walk the property with us and give us his professional opinion on all our trees. He says we may not have to have the one in question removed.
I'm working on my tree badge and have been identifying trees here. I'm going to check my work with him and see how I did! I'm so excited about that part.

It sounds like you finally found someone who's serious about his job. And it only took almost two months. Tree people must be taking the quarantine seriously :-) How great it would be if the tree can be saved and not be a danger to anyone.

The Arborist finally made his way over. He surveyed all our trees. He sees no potential danger! Great news. We can keep the trees that I was previously worried about. They are strong and healthy. Of course if we get a super big storm that may be a different thing. But he says that since they are part of the forest it helps to break the wind and prevent them from toppling over. Otherwise we have strong root systems.
He also gave us some great ideas to cut down on the erosion on our back hill. This was money well spent. It would have cost us thousands to take down the trees - this was $80.00 for his service. Definitely recommend an arborist when you have tree issues.
