My brain is crammed packed with interesting but useless information. The kind that I never seem to be able to work into a conversation. Yesterday my sister and I visited an antique shop (so thankful Texas is opening back up)where I found a 2004 American Test Kitchen cookbook. On page 314 I found this little tidbit.

In the late 1800s animal shaped crackers came from England to USA. They were so popular in 1902 Nabisco designed the now famous circus box that had a string attached so the box could be hung on Christmas trees. In 2004 there were 19 different animal crackers.

That's my little bit of nonsense - what's yours.

Lol! How fun and interesting Sara! My Sara and I LOVE feasting on the little beastie biscuits!! In fact I usually buy a couple of large bags a week! Great with coffee! The hubs is so funny, he'll lay his out on the table and tell our furbaby exactly what he's got and then take the animals out he thinks Kodabear will like and give them to him! I see two happy boys there! Lol

My bit of nonsensical info would be about toothpicks!! YES!! Who invented these little pieces of sticks that pick old food from your teeth and WHY? ( Of course being a retired dental tech, I would wonder about things like this, lol)
Seems they've been around for CENTURIES as they have turned up in prehistoric graves found in Northern Italy back in the 1800's. They were bronzed burial objects. From the 17th century people stylized their toothpicks into works of art and jewelry. The first toothpick manufacturing machine was developed in 1869. Wooden disposable toothpicks were made of birch and now companies make them of plastic as they are more effective in cleaning!! Abd here ALL these years I thought they were made for handsome leading men in the movies to make them look so cool!! :D

Dianna I find your little tidbit about toothpicks very interesting. I will never look at the humble toothpick the same way again. Think of the engineering that went into inventing the first toothpick machine.

BTW one of the things I omitted from my little bit of nonsense was the koala bear was the newest addition as of the book's issue in 2004.

Sara and Dianna, these little facts were unknown to me and I think they are so interesting! Like MIchele, my mind is drawing a blank for trivia too, but I will think on it and come back soon!

Sara...I loved your fun little tid-bits!! Very interesting. I never knew that circus box was meant to hang on the Christmas Tree. I use to put little things I found in them that
I wanted to keep after I ate the animal crackers. Once the frosted animal crackers came out, however, I never wanted those plain ones again!!!

After reading this last night, just before drifting off, a tidbit of trivia came to me: it wasn't until 1818 that the right shoe was made. Before that, both shoes were the same.

Jana, Thanks for your sweet words.

Peggy, I've never had a frosted animal cracker - didn't know they made them.

Vanessa, so glad they figured that all out in 1818. I wonder what took them so long.

I had always thought that string was for carrying around. LOL! Wish I had known this tidbit when my girls were little. Would have been a cute tradition to start. Hang their animal crackers on the tree for Christmas morning.

I read that the athletic cup was invented before the helmet. The first cup was used in 1874 and the helmet was used in 1934.(I had to look those dates up) Goofy to me.

Maybe the cup being invented before the helmet indicates what men think is more important..........

Sara,

The origin of things is fascinating. I never knew that about animal crackers. I bet the early Nabisco animal crackers boxes are valuable to collectors. It's always the stuff people throw away that is the most valuable later.

It's hard to believe any of the packaging we throw away now will be collectible.

Another little tidbit from the cookbook. To keep roaming pigs from damaging their grain fields New York residents built a long stone wall on the northern edge of what now is Lower Manhattan. The street that bordered the wall became known as Wall Street.

I bet today's packaging will not be collectible. It doesn't have the character of the older stuff. Though I wouldn't pay for any of it myself.

These are awesome. I googled some trivia because I don’t know any off the top of my head and I found this one very interesting. Play-doh was once used as a wallpaper cleaner before it was rebranded as a child’s play toy. It makes me chuckle since play-doh can be so messy and sticks to carpet! Wouldn’t it have done more damage than good lol!

LOL I was wondering if you would. He was the mailman on the long running successful sitcom Cheers. He always had a fact that was, well, quirky, interesting and factual. In other words, the fact guy. LOL
A funny Clavin video. LOL
