I forgot what page I was on but a lady in Ohio---I think-----said she would like to have ramps. Well how I got mine started I just stopped and bought some from a person selling them by the road----if they are dug with roots on them you can plant them and start a patch. Then I walked up the creek and found a huge patch of them I think my stepfather planted---or they washed down the creek from where he had planted them. He went every where planting ramps and if I was younger I would walk the creek to Flat Top---he had huge patches---but it would be 3 or 4 miles up the creek in rough country. But I just read our WV ramps are being depleted because New York City loves them and it is good money to sell them. You have to leave part of the root so they will come back. And Richwood WV is the ramp capital of the world. No one loves ramps like us West Virginias. They are just a wild leek is all---but very special. A ramp casserole for us tonight.

A ramp is a wild leek that grows in the woods here in the mountains in the spring---the are only around for a month or so---but so fun to go and pick. They have a strong taste like garlic. I love them now---but used to hate them as a child. I just love to forage in the woods and they are the first things to find.

They only grow in the east---but I was reading about them on the internet and some guy got ramp roots from WV and ramp seed and was trying to grow them out that way--which I think is silly because a green onion is just as good in my book. We only eat them as they grow here and are free in the woods. I looked on the internet and someone wanted forty five dollars for forty ramps. Only a nut job would pay that or a very rich idiot. This is depleting the natural ramp patches . but people are greedy and I guess it is easy money. Just like ginseng is becoming depleted by greed. We had a lot on our land here once but people dug it all out and didn't leave the little roots or replant the seeds. I wish those kind of people would stay out of the forests.
