Try to stay dry Grace. That is too much rain. I am not in much hurry here either, Vicki. Supposed to be a cold weekend coming up. Cold and rainy. My rhubarb is doing well. Need to make some jam.

Michele here's hoping you get your plowing and potato planting done before rain hits.

Severe thunderstorms with possible hail later today. Rain is good I sure don't want the hail. All my plants are growing so I would hate to see them hurt.

I have four volunteer plants growing in and around two of my container composts. Two are squash with beautiful blossoms but I don't know what kind - yellow or zucchini. The other a pepper plant - jalapeno, bell or any of the other kinds of pepper parings I put in the compost. The fourth plant is a mystery to me. Will have to wait until it grows a little more and I see a blossom before I know.

Sara it sounds like you will have lots of surprises this fall in your compost pile. Let us know what they are when they ripen!

Dawn I'll be sure to let you know.

It rain during the night so I don't have to water for a day or two. Been an odd year for watering. Most years I am watering if not everyday every other day by now but this year I have only had to water a few plants a couple of times because of the constant rain and lower temperatures. It's starting to heat up now and there's more dry days so I will have to keep on top of what needs watering until I'm on a regular watering schedule.

Nora your homegrown veggies are beautiful. I know you are proud.

Checked this morning and have blossoms on one eggplant. Something eating on Swiss chart but couldn't find what was doing it. It's heating up and the rain will be slowing down so the pests will come out to mess with my raised beds.

Update on one of the volunteer squash plants in compost - it's butternut squash and there are two 2" wee ones.

I was looking for inspiration for meals this morning, so I grabbed my bowels and wondered through the garden. We will have a spinach and lettuce salad with strawberry viinaigrette dressing, fresh beets with a chicken we harvested last month, raspberry muffins for a snack and I am putting lots of lemon balm and calendula flowers on the dehydrator. Our garden is late this year because of the cold spring, but I am sure enjoying the harvest now.

A little rain can straighten a flower stem. A little love can change a life.

Julie your supper will be beautiful as well as yummy.

Eggplants still have blossoms but no eggplants and Swiss chard is pitiful. Herbs and flowers are doing nicely. Will harvest volunteer butternut squash next week. I like them small. The other volunteer plant turned out to be a yellow and green gourd. It now has a dozen or so of all sizes of gourds.

The red cabbage - it's so slow forming a head I don't know if there will ever be enough cabbage out of all six of them for a qt of sauerkraut. This year has not been a good year for vegetables in my part of Texas. Too many dark days even on days it wasn't raining.

Julie, beautiful and so yummy!!!! Such a strange Spring weather start this year. No horn worms so far. Harvested about 15 tomatoes. Then they just stopped blooming. Now they have started back blooming again.

Grace, your Peonys are beautiful. Even my flowers haven't done this well. Black-eyed Susan and Zinnas so much smaller than last
Year! I have done the same everything!
a few sunflowers were transplanted by the birds, so sweet!

Oh Julie,, loved your bounty from your garden especially the calendula flowers! I tried growing them but flailed. Everything else did great! I've been harvesting my lemon grass & fennel, sharing my sunflowers, eating my Nasturtiums, okra and cucumbers and tomatoes. We are ready to harvest the watermelons, and the pumpkins are coming up nicely!

sunflowers always make me smile. I have a row of colored ones in my garden. They will hopefully be blooming soon. I have started picking peas. I have picked some small cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. We had a storm to flatten my garden but it is back up for the most part.

Michele I'm happy your garden bounced back and you have begun to harvest a little here and there.

The three vegetables I planted - red cabbage, Swiss chard, & eggplant - are just there - barely hanging on. All herbs are growing like weeds. Next year I won't mess with vegetables and will stick with what does good for me and grow herbs, roses, and flowers.

I will try to keep the veggies alive to fall and see if they will do something then.

sorry to hear that Sara. Eggplant is hard to grow for me. I tried couple times and never had any luck. Still trying to get caught up on the weeding here. Ran to town last night, so no weeding. Maybe tonight after work. Big weeds are much easier to pull!! haha And you really see results. lol

Michele here in Texas big weeds have big roots. A new weed blew in on the wind or by bird and it is popping up all over. Hard to pull - have to use my Cobra weeder.

Thanks Sara but like you I struggled hard this year and had to replant several times! Not sure why so hard but it was. Hopefully fall harvest will be better for both of us!!

The one word that comes to mind when I think of my 2019 garden - disappointing. But - and there is always a but in gardening - there's next year and another season to play in the dirt. Some years you just have to cut your losses and think ahead to the coming year.

I've decided to harvest all my herbs early this year and start prepping the beds for winter and next spring. I'm ready to start thinking about my 2020 garden. In Oct I will plant garlic for next year's harvest. Today I ordered elephant garlic to be delivered in Sept. Come Oct I will plant the elephant garlic and garlic from the grocery store. It's the hard neck purple garlic and I find it does just as good for me as the high price garlic from nurseries.
