Bought a vintage double wedding ring quilt and did NOT notice a rather faint stain front and center of the quilt.
Any ideas about cleaning a vintage quilt?
I know there are some products on Amazon but I am a little nervous about all the sweet and COLORFUL bits of fabric that make up the 'rings.' I'd like a clean and bright quilt and but I do not want to risk fading.
Thoughts? Advice?

Oh Melody,, wish I could help.. I have never tackled a quilt, but for vtg table linens and hankies, I hand was them and then lay them out on the lawn, the chloraphile from the grass fades stains.
What a lovely D.R. quilt., lucky you.

Melody,, I just typed in "how to launder a vintage quilt, in the 'search' and it came up with lots of good suggestions.
The one I liked was laying an old white sheet in your tub, then using baby shampoo, fill the tub with luke warm (barely) water and then put in your quilt, let soak for 10min, and ever so gently rub the stain with a white cloth, keep in mind that the fabric may be fragile and depending on the dye used, the colors might run.. then lift the sheet w/the quilt on it... out of the tub and lay out on a surface, like your lawn, to dry.
Because the fabric is old, it may be prone to tearing when being lifted by hand... so handle gently.

Good luck getting the stains out of the quilt. I don't think those fabrics will fade when washed - they look like mostly calicos. Grace's found method sounds pretty good - the sheet will keep the heavy weight off the seams of the quilt. There are also special soaps just for washing old quilts. You might find some of them to use in the tub.
I have a lone star quilt that was made by Ed's grandmother. It has HUGE brown stains in 4-6 places - I think it was folded when something stained it and the stain went throughout. I have tried many things and nothing has gotten rid of the stains.

Melody, This is what I have used on my grandmother's linens and quilts. Have to be very careful and I rub this on my hand and then on the linen instead of rubbing directly onto the fabric. http://www.starcrest.com/product/id/136824.do

To hand-wash, fill a deep, laundry sink or bathtub with cold water. Be certain that the sink or tub is very clean and has no residue from cleaning agents that could cause damage to the quilt. Use a liquid detergent that is gentle and free of dyes and perfumes. I like to use Orvus Soap, a paste found in feed stores and used for washing livestock.
Place your quilt in the water, being certain that the entire quilt gets wet. Gently move your quilt around in the water. Allow the quilt to remain in the water for about 10 minutes. Next, drain the wash water and fill the tub again with fresh water. Repeat draining and refilling the tub until the water and quilt are soap free – clear water and no suds.
