For new FarmGirls: Some of us plant the National Herb Society HOTY to celebrate our Jubilee in May and some plant roses. Like everything else connected with our Jubilee we choose our own path of celebrating. I choose to plant HOTY. BTW - May is MaryJane's birthday month.
I post early for us who order our seeds and plants at this time of the year.
This years HOTY is hops. Must say I am not at all interested in hops - never thought about it must less to plant it. So I am substituting apple mint instead. Apple mint will tie in with our Apple Festival in Sept.
If you wish to plant a Jubilee herb this year and do not want hops then you can follow my lead and do apple mint or choose a herb to your liking and deem it your Jubilee herb. 2018 is wild open when it comes to what herb we plant.
I will order my apple mint from Mountain Valley Growers when I place my order for other herbs sometime this week. The plants will be delivered at my planting time.

Apple mint??? I have never heard of that or tried it but it sounds like I need to pursue it! I will see if it can grow here in Florida before I order some. Great idea, Sara to substitute an herb that will carry us right up to the Annual Farmgirl Apple Festival here at MJF in September! I love it!!

Winnie, I'm glad you like my apple mint idea - thought you might. If you find you can't grow it and mine does good I will dry some and send it to you.

Thanks Sara!! I have "do research on apple mint" on my growing list this week of things to do. I will let you know when I have time to ask around at the local nursery that carries a wide range of plants for this area.

I bet apple mint would make great jam...
What do you use hops for? Guess I need to look those up! I'm still trying to get my kitchen herb garden set up... I havent figured out what works yet for us here.

Shannon can't help you with hops. I wasn't interested so I didn't look it up. Didn't think about making jelly with the apple mint but you're right it should be good. I was thinking along the lines of adding it to apple pie for Apple Pie Sunday. The only time of the year I actually make a pie of any kind. A baker I am not.
After I dry it I think I will make apple mint sugar which should be good in the apple pie and hot/iced tea. I hope both you and Winnie can grow it in your areas.

Marie - well I certainly wont be making beer, but I was thinking hops are medicinal as well... I'm thinking they have a sedative property...

Umm, Apple Mint sounds wonderful, I will see if I can grow it here in the mountains and almost 9000 feet in altitude. May have to try to grow it inside in my window herb garden.
Looking forward to celebrating Jubilee this year.

Apple Mint Mentha suaveolens
A container with a large surface area helps mint to grow abundantly. Mints grown in five to six hours of sun develop better color and flavor. In hot summer areas, late afternoon shade helps to cut down on the watering chores.
They are hardy to zone 5 and will die back to the ground in winter. Cut Apple Mint to the ground in late fall and it will be fresh and crisp in spring. It may need to be divided in the spring. When the mint stops producing heavily, it is time to thin out the roots.

YellowRose, I have planted the hops once. It didn't do well since my husband mowed it down. I would like to try to grow them again. Thanks for the encouragement. Either way you go with the plants they both are great.

Tiana, why did you grow hops and how did you plan to use it? You're the first person I know of who has planted hops. Sorry you lost the crop.

YellowRose, We make soap and balms for the markets and a few state parks. One of our soaps has some ground hops in it was the first reason. 2nd I like to grow anything that is unusual- we are growing beach plums and Russian Pomegranites in West Virginia. My plums have produced but not the pomegranite as of yet. I thought maybe one day I would try my hand at making a beer or ale or grow them for my son who has made beer. We don't drink beer here at our Lodge. It is also a very beautiful plant. I saw them growing at a heritage museum once and thought how beautiful and fragrant it was. So...I am trying.

Thanks. I've made soap before so when you mentioned it you got my attention so I looked up hops. Did not realize it was a vine - a very long 25' vine so it's not for me and my wee container gardens. Will stick with apple mint for my Jubilee herb. I do like learning from other FarmGirls about what they have grown.

Ohhh I want to participate....hmm apple mint vs hops....I'm going to have to look up what they are both used for to decide what I want to plant. Tell me about some people planting roses, I might do that too! :). I have a rose bed but the darn dogs knocked a couple of my baby bushes down last year so will be planting a new one or two anyway. I won't be able to host or attend a Jubilee this year but am finally where I can plant something of my own!!

My mother in law got me an apple mint plant last year. I put it in a pot and it made wonderful tea! It's not too strong like the orange mint I had before. I LOVED it. I put the pot in the garage and I'll see what it does this spring. I HIGHLY recommend trying it! I'll be looking for more if mine doesn't come back.

I am looking into Hops! One of my favorite restaurants has Hops growing as a shade plant, I believe it is the male plant as there is no fruit produced, just vines. It grows back every year and very quickly, shading their patio from direct sun. Very cool plant, I would like to learn more about it :)

I stillhave not found any 'Hops ' yet... but amstill searching
around here... it's still to early to even think about gardening over

Apple mint makes wonderful iced tea. A friend of ours gave us a plant last summer which we planted, so now we wait until spring to see if it survived winter!
We have a great local micro brewery that grows hops in the patio area, which is where we like to eat when we go there in summer. The hops is great "viney" shade. That would be the only reason I would plant it!

Honk I will try hops just because the plant looks so cool. I have grown Apple mint before. Smells wonderful but the smell is not as strong as spearmint for example.
