I love all the garden stories and pictures!! Marie your Dahliahs are gorgeous!!! We got a good soaking rain last night and today! I'm waiting for it to get cooler so I can clean out and deadhead to plant Turnip greens. They do good here after it gets cooler. They will grow till the first hard freeze! My mums are loaded down with buds, I forgot what color they were.Last year they were the size of these yellow ones I bought last week at the Wal-Mart garden center. Last year right before Thanksgiving, I planted about 6 mums in my raised bed, they all came back except 1.

Thank you, Connie. Oh I wish I could plant mums here in MInnesota but our winters are brutal. I did find one at Lowe’s that’s tri-color and have never seen one so I had to get it. #128514;#128514;#128514;

This morning I sowed the rest of my yellow 4 O'clock seeds. Sowed last fall but only one came up and didn't do well. Neighbor moved in a travel trailer which blocked the sun to that bed. Used another bed today with direct sun but late afternoon shade. Most plants in Texas have to have late afternoon shade to thrive.

Harvested pineapple mint and one container of sage. Will leave the sage in raised bed to use fresh until 1st frost.

Sara,,, lucky you... I just finished 'putting my garden to bed'...
cleaning out, weeding and digging up bulbs... the only thing left is to final trim my lavender and roses...
Oh sigh,, Good bye sweet garden... see you next Spring.

Grace, give me pointers on how you trim your lavender pretty please.
I usually just let mine go and hope for the best next year, but I have some planted in pots/old watering cans that may or may not make it.
My local gal gave it to me as it was near death and it has done quite well, but not sure what to do to overwinter it. One is a sweet variety that has pink strawberry like blooms.

Maria, those are beautiful! We don't get a heavy frost some years, not until January!
Sara, love four O' clocks! I had a small patch of pinkish ones this year. I had Pineapple mint one year, loved it.
Nothing like fresh sage!
I use to grow Dill for my granny, she canned a Garlic dill spear and she loved fresh dill, so I grew it just for her, I miss that. She went to Heaven in 2005. I love to hear what your doing in the garden and the Kitchen!!
I heard Grace was the Lavender Queen too! Hugs!

Connie I buy big full mums but they never winter over and come back so I treat them as annuals. Would love to have them come back.

Well, today I am going to take advantage of the bit-o-sunshine and mid 50 degree weather and prune the roses and put away all the flower pots.. it is just a matter of a dew weeks before we get our first snow... my gal~pals in Montana & Colorado have already gotten theirs.
Soon it will be time to pull out the Garden catalogues and day dream of summer gardening again! lol!

I am the 'don't follow the rules' lavender gal! lol!
Lisa, , check your potted lavender plant (roots) if they are over grown for the pot, transplant them into a bigger pot.. you can bring it indoors for the Winter. water sparingly unless you keep your house uber warm then check more often,, Lavender is a drought tolerant plant,, if the tips start to curl over,,, it needs water.
If you decide to plant it, do so early enough before Winter (ground freezes) so the roots can take hold.
As for pruning,, I prune my lavender into a mound shape (think- 1/2 round)... do not prun past the 'wood',,, stay just above the wood.. you can tell the wood from the shoots by the color..
Up here in Spokane WA., we have winter hardy lavender cultivated and grown over in Sequim WA.,, so ours are Winter hardy.
Actually the snow covers the mounds and protects the lavender from damage caused by a freeze.
this is a picture at my old house,,
I grew both 'Melissa' and 'Sharon Roberts' cultivers.. (Melissa is a white lavender.)
this what they looked like early on...
The family we sold our home to,, has changed a lot of the landscaping and there is only 1/2 as many lavender plants.. I had 125 in the field, not including what was around the house and in my fenced in garden...
alas,,, everyone has different ideas on gardening.

The above pics are from our old house just barely a mile down the road,, the house we are in now, is smaller, but with more acerage..
This this years planting of lavender,,,
right after pruning..
and of course, our lil Ginger wanted to be in the photo...
I had to do a "walk about" to find all my lil Gnomes... now they are picked up and stored away to protect them from the brutal snow.

Great pics Grace and Connie. Love seeing FarmGirl gardens. Lavenders don't do well in our Texas heat. This year I took a chance on an lavender that is supposed to survive the heat. It's name is Sarah so that makes it extra special to me. It survived the heat, but did not flower, and now to see if Sarah will winter over. If it winters over I will seriously think about ordering more for beds along sidewalk to frontporch.

Here in New England, we are putting our gardens to bed. Fall color should be pretty good with all the wet weather, but the recent Nor'Easter took a lot of trees' leaves off. I will have to go out and take some pictures for you all to see.
Next year, I will be pulling alot of plants out in the front that were destroyed by the storm in May. I also want to put in a few more peonies and roses. I planted my garlic this week in the garden for next spring. I will start planning my veggie garden early. I also teach a class on seeds in a few months.
I do like the "break" we get from the garden in winter - Connecticut is extremely weedy and hard to cultivate.
